Job description

At OpenBCI, we’re defining the future of non-invasive neurotechnology. We’re a small team of engineers, designers, and scientists building tools that measure the brain and body, used by researchers, developers, and clinicians around the world. We’re seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to own the electrical design of our hardware from concept through production, bringing high-precision wearable devices to market for consumer, research, and medical use.

Location: Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY (on-site 4 days per week, 10 am - 6 pm)

  • Lead new electrical engineering product development from concept to production, owning the electrical design through architecture, schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, bring-up, transfer to manufacturing, and sustainment.
  • Develop new non-invasive neurotechnology for consumer, research-grade, and medical markets, pushing capabilities while designing for the cost, reliability, and production volume each market requires.
  • Collaborate across engineering and business leadership to help define hardware requirements and shape the product roadmap.
  • Design wearable devices for regulatory compliance and certification, including for body-worn wireless products, battery safety, and for medical device design controls.
  • Own design verification and validation including defining test strategy and acceptance criteria, designing experiments, building test setups, running tests on prototypes and production units, analyzing results, and maintaining documentation that traces performance to requirements.
  • Lead sustaining engineering and continuous improvement for products in production, using root cause analysis and design revisions to raise the bar on signal quality, reliability, and manufacturing yield.
  • Manage project schedules, vendors, and contract manufacturers, and collaborate cross-functionally with software, industrial design, and research teams.
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of electrical engineering experience in hardware product development, including at least one product taken from concept through high-volume production.
  • Strong low-noise analog and mixed-signal design skills, including signal chain design, ADC selection, analog filtering, and grounding and shielding strategies.
  • Biopotential signal acquisition experience, especially EEG, is strongly preferred. This includes designing analog front ends for microvolt-level signals, managing electrode-skin interface effects, maximizing common-mode rejection (such as driven right leg circuits), and minimizing motion artifacts and interference.
  • System architecture experience, including selecting processors, sensors, and wireless components, and defining power, data, and interface architecture across the system.
  • Experience designing medical electrical equipment to IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-1-2, working within ISO 14971 risk management and ISO 13485 design controls.
  • Experience taking wireless products through FCC and CE certification, including EMC and ESD design, pre-compliance testing, and working with test labs.
  • Hands-on BLE and Wi-Fi hardware design, including RF layout and antenna integration in compact enclosures.
  • Low-power, battery-powered design, including power architecture, battery charging and protection, power budgeting, and thermal management in small form factors.
  • Expert in compact, high-density PCB design in Altium or KiCad, working closely with mechanical and industrial design on enclosure integration, and fluent with lab instruments for debug and characterization.
  • Track record of owning design verification and validation, including test protocols, environmental and reliability testing, data analysis in Python or MATLAB, and documentation that drives design decisions and supports certification.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and test (DFM/DFT), new product introduction with contract manufacturers, and sustaining engineering.
  • Proven ability to own schedules, vendors, and deliverables, and to explain technical tradeoffs clearly to software, design, research, and business teammates.
  • Thrives on a small team where the scope is broad and priorities evolve.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with neurotechnology, EEG, BCI, or wearable biosensing products.
  • Additional sensing modalities such as PPG, EDA, IMU, or eye tracking.
  • Rigid-flex and HDI PCB design for head-worn or body-worn form factors.
  • High-speed digital design (such as DDR, USB, or MIPI) for processor-intensive systems.
  • Comfort writing basic firmware or scripts for board bring-up and production testing.
  • Battery safety certification experience (IEC 62133, UN 38.3).
  • Familiarity with 3D printing tools and mechanical fabrication
  • Contributions to open-source projects.

OpenBCI is a growing company at the leading edge of neurotechnology. As we expand into new markets, the team who join now will shape the products and technology that define the future of computing.
