Roles & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with product development, marketing, and sales teams to create new and innovative products, as well as enhance existing product lines.
  • Present new concepts and emerging technologies to the various development and marketing teams.
  • Ensure all products function as intended, meet all product development specifications, are within budget, and are developed and completed on time.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to meet tight product development timelines (often less than a year, sometimes just a few months).
  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical staff, customers, and factories, including those for whom English is a second language.
  • Utilize sketching and drawing skills to explain ideas internally and to manufacturing partners visually.
  • Interface with sales teams to support product presentations and customer engagements.
  • Lead product design and development for lighting and electrical products operating at 120V, low voltage Class 2, battery-operated, rechargeable batteries, USB, and solar-powered systems.
  • Develop circuit designs and mechanical components, including structural parts and attachment methods, using adhesives and fasteners.
  • Perform electrical, thermal, short-term, and long-term life testing on products.
  • Repair and troubleshoot product samples for customer meetings.
  • Write detailed product specifications, guidelines, and regulatory documentation.
  • Prepare and maintain instruction sheets, including safety instructions, assembly guides, troubleshooting tips, warnings, cautions, and notes beyond regulatory requirements.
  • Interface with Quality Control (QC), Customer Service, and occasionally directly with customers to ensure product quality and satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with factories in Asia, managing communication across time zones and conducting regular calls during Asian business hours.
  • Travel to Asia for approximately two weeks at a time to support product development, factory supervisory visits during production, and occasional regulatory meetings.
  • Attend regulatory meetings, such as UL and CSA, either in person or via teleconference, including those held in Asia.
  • Maintain extensive working knowledge of Excel and Word, including advanced formatting capabilities.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus on lighting and product development.
  • Previous experience in app development is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience working with factories in Asia, including managing time zone differences and travel requirements.
  • Familiarity with product safety standards, testing procedures, and regulatory requirements (UL, CSA).
  • Basic mechanical skills related to product design and assembly.
  • Proficiency in creating technical drawings and sketches.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt quickly to changing project needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and comprehensive product documentation.
  • Comfortable working primarily in an office environment with occasional travel.

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally to Asia for approximately two weeks at a time, one to two trips per year maximum.
  • Occasional travel to trade shows domestically.
  • Flexibility to participate in calls outside regular business hours to accommodate time zone differences.

Salary: Varies greatly depending on experience, with a mid-range salary of around $145,000 - $155,000/year.
