Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer (High Voltage)

Cambridge, MA

About Acceleron Fusion:
Acceleron Fusion is developing muon‑catalyzed fusion—a path to clean, abundant energy. Building on research sponsored by the U.S. DOE, we have recently raised a $24M Series A venture capital round and have already logged 100+ hours of muon-catalyzed fusion in tests at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Our collaborators include PSI, Oak Ridge, Argonne, Fermilab, and several universities. Join a team where fundamental physics meets application-oriented engineering, and your designs could help move our technology from the laboratory to a commercial energy source.

About this role:
We’re looking for an experienced electrical systems engineer to design advanced beam-control hardware for our fusion experiments. You will develop high-voltage and RF solutions that enable precise manipulation of particle beams at energies from kilovolts to megavolts.

What you’ll do:

  • Analyze, model, and mitigate electrical-breakdown and insulation challenges in high-voltage structures and circuits.
  • Design kilovolt-to-megavolt electrostatic systems—for example using Marx generators, Cockcroft‑Walton stacks, or Pelletrons —for particle beam acceleration and cooling.
  • Architect RF power and energy recovery systems using Klystrons, Magnetrons, waveguides, and similar components.
  • Build multiphysics models incorporating electromagnetics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and particle transport.
  • Build prototypes and conduct lab tests.
  • Generate clear design docs, test plans, and risk analyses that support rapid iteration and safe operations.
  • Travel with the team (including international travel) to integrate your hardware at beamline facilities and carry out experiments.

What we’re looking for:

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Five years experience designing high voltage or pulsed power systems.
  • Proficiency with COMSOL, ANSYS, or similar multiphysics simulation tools.
  • Proficiency with circuit design tools (e.g. Altium).
  • Hands‑on lab experience: high voltage safety standards and best practices; lab instrumentation; practical troubleshooting.
  • Thoughtful collaboration skills, able to interact and work closely with people from other technical disciplines and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Experience with particle accelerators, charged particle optics, or high vacuum systems.
  • Proficiency with GEANT4, FLUKA, MCNP, or similar Monte Carlo simulation tools.

Details & Logistics:

  • This is a full-time, onsite role working from our facility in Cambridge, MA.
  • Travel (including international) for several weeks per year is required.
  • Our benefits package includes health & dental insurance, retirement savings with company contribution, stock options, paid time off, and 11 company holidays.
  • The salary range for this role is $110K to $150K. This range represents the minimum and maximum base compensation Acceleron Fusion reasonably expects to pay for this position. The specific salary offered will be determined based on relevant factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location. This position may also be eligible for additional compensation such as bonuses, equity, or other benefits.
  • Candidates who don’t meet all of our requirements are encouraged to apply.

Acceleron Fusion is an equal opportunity employer, committed to building a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of background.
