Gillig, a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses, seeks a Senior Electrical Engineer – ITS to lead the design, development, integration, testing, and industrialization of electrical systems.

This hands-on role focuses on ITS, infotainment, CANbus, antenna systems, voice/data radio, cybersecurity, harnessing, and EMI/EMC. You will collaborate with suppliers, manufacturing, and field teams to deliver reliable, manufacturable solutions for urban transit.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain BOMs and modular structures.
• Analyze supplier components and new technologies to optimize concepts.
• Perform electrical design analysis including power distribution, grounding, protection, EMC/EMI, signal integrity, and thermal management.
• Create, review and release electrical schematics, vehicle components, harness assemblies, and formboard drawings using ECAD tools.
• Support vehicle harness design, component integration, CANbus, antenna systems, and voice/data radio systems.
• Support integration of infotainment, CAD/AVL/AVM, passenger information, surveillance, security, and vehicle monitoring systems.
• Collaborate with major component suppliers and testing teams to engineer ITS systems.
• Support Engineering Change Control, PCOs, and configuration management.
• Troubleshoot electrical designs and field issues with multimeters, oscilloscope, CANalyzer and related tools.
• Ensure designs meet customer requirements, performance objectives, manufacturing constraints and industry standards.

Job Summary

GILLIG is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer – ITS to support the design, development, integration, testing, and industrialization of electrical systems for heavy-duty transit buses.

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), infotainment, CAD/AVL/AVM, surveillance, cybersecurity, vehicle harnessing, CANbus, antenna systems, and voice/data radio systems. The engineer will work closely with customers, suppliers, manufacturing, testing, controls, mechanical engineering, and field service teams to develop reliable, manufacturable, and serviceable electrical solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), including modular BOM structures and component applications.
• Analyze supplier components, existing designs, and new technologies to optimize electrical system concepts.
• Perform electrical design analysis covering power distribution, grounding, circuit protection, EMC/EMI, signal integrity, and thermal management.
• Develop robust, manufacturable, serviceable, and cost-effective electrical designs.
• Create, review, and release electrical schematics, vehicle components, harness assemblies, and formboard drawings using ECAD tools.
• Support vehicle harness design, component integration, discrete signals, CANbus, antenna systems, and voice/data radio systems.
• Support integration of infotainment, CAD/AVL/AVM, passenger information, surveillance, security, and vehicle monitoring systems.
• Work directly with major component and technology suppliers to engineer and document ITS systems.
• Support Engineering Change Control, Production Change Orders (PCOs), Design REI releases, and configuration management.
• Support electrical designs throughout the complete product lifecycle, including development, production launch, vehicle variants, customer customization, and field support.
• Collaborate with test engineers to develop DVP&R, execute test plans, and review test results and validation reports.
• Troubleshoot electrical system issues using multimeters, power supplies, CANalyzer, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic equipment.
• Support prototyping, product assembly, testing, validation, and production problem resolution.
• Provide technical input for engineering documentation and technical publications.
• Collaborate with mechanical, controls, manufacturing, production, field service, and other engineering teams.
• Provide technical recommendations and solutions to senior engineering staff and management.
• Ensure released designs meet customer requirements, performance objectives, manufacturing requirements, serviceability, cost targets, and applicable industry standards.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive engineering experience.
• Experience with automotive, commercial, or heavy-duty vehicle electrical systems.
• Strong experience with BOM management, engineering documentation, revision control, and configuration management.
• Experience with harness design and formboard drawings.
• Proficiency with ECAD/CAD tools such as Zuken E3, Capital, or AutoCAD.
• Hands-on experience with:
• Vehicle harnessing
• CANbus
• Voice and data radio systems
• Strong electrical troubleshooting and diagnostic experience using multimeters, power supplies, CANalyzer, oscilloscopes, and similar tools.
• Experience with electrical component design, DFM, DFS, and value engineering.
• Experience working with component suppliers, engineering service providers, testing suppliers, and product validation teams.
• Strong understanding of electrical documentation and the ability to communicate technical requirements to manufacturing and field service teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Infotainment, CAD, AVL, and AVM systems.
• Knowledge of RFI, EMC, EMI, and ESD.
• Experience with stationary or mobile broadcast systems.
• Knowledge of industry standards such as NFPA, NEC, and APTA.
• Experience with configure-to-order products and modular BOM management.
• Experience in transit technology, transit vehicle systems, or large-scale ITS implementations.
• Onsite position in Livermore, CA.
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment around heavy machinery and tools.
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, or squat as required.
• Must be able to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, bump caps, and hearing protection.
• Limited travel may be required.
• Standard start time is 6:00 AM, negotiable.
