JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Electrical Engineer - ITS is a hands-on engineering position directly responsible for transit bus design.
The role involves requirements analysis, concept design, detailed design, problem resolution, vehicle attribute design, BOM development, customer application research, and other engineering activities associated with designing, configuring, and industrializing electrical systems for heavy-duty transit buses.
The engineer will have direct influence at the systems and component level to optimize vehicle functionality and performance attributes. The position is on-site in Livermore, CA.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
GILLIG Engineering develops, customizes, and configures clean-technology heavy-duty transit buses.
Electrical Engineering is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing electrical systems and components, including:
- Low- and high-voltage power distribution
- CANbus network topology and variation
- Infotainment
- CAD/AVL
The team works cross-functionally to support safety, durability, performance, regulatory requirements, production troubleshooting, and cost-effective designs for heavy-duty transit buses.
TECHNICAL FOCUS
Within the ITS & Surveillance group, the engineer will focus on integration challenges involving:
- Infotainment
- CAD - Computer-Aided Dispatch
- AVL - Automatic Vehicle Location
- AVM - Automatic Vehicle Monitoring
- Cybersecurity needs
- Exterior signage
- Interior monitors/displays
- Surveillance and security
- Vehicle monitoring systems
- Vehicle harnessing
- CANbus
- Voice and data radio systems
The engineer will work directly with suppliers to appropriately engineer and document these systems and ensure their functionality.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOM), including appropriate application of parts and assemblies.
- Provide input on modular BOM structures to improve configuration efficiency.
- Gather information on supplier components, existing designs, and technological advancements.
- Rationalize and optimize electrical design concepts.
- Use analytical tools to assess:
- Power
- Grounding
- EMC
- Signal integrity
- Thermal management
- Perform design trade-offs and optimization.
- Develop robust, manufacturable, and maintainable design concepts.
- Use ECAD tools to create, review, and release vehicle components, schematics, and harness assemblies.
- Support Customer and Design REI releases.
- Participate in BOM structuring, change control, PCO, and engineered production changes.
- Support designs throughout development, production launch, variant design, customization, and field support.
- Work with test engineers to create DVP&R, execute test plans, and review test results/reports.
- Provide technical input to technical publications.
- Collaborate with mechanical, controls, manufacturing, and production teams.
- Operate independently in a primary engineering role and propose solutions to senior engineers and management.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive engineering experience.
- Familiarity with automotive, commercial, and/or heavy-duty vehicle design.
- Experience with BOM, documentation control, and revision/version management.
- Configure-to-order product and modular BOM management experience is a plus.
- Working knowledge of harness design and formboard drawing creation.
- Fluency with CAD software such as Zuken or Capital.
- Experience working with major:
- Engineering service suppliers
- Experience with direct component design, including:
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
- Design for Service (DFS)
- Hands-on experience with:
- Vehicle harnessing
- CANbus
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting, assembly, prototyping, testing, and validation experience.
- Experience using diagnostic tools such as:
- Multimeters
- Power supplies
- Knowledge of RFI, EMC, EMI, ESD, or stationary/mobile broadcast systems is highly beneficial.
- Experience with Infotainment, CAD, AVL, and AVM technologies is highly desirable.
ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Hands-on troubleshooting of electrical systems and ability to form conclusions regarding electrical system failures.
- Strong background creating and maintaining detailed electrical documentation.
- Experience with Zuken E3 and AutoCAD.
- Ability to communicate design requirements effectively to:
- Manufacturing teams
- Field service technicians
- System integrators
- Ability to switch between detailed electrical design, system integration, and stakeholder communication.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with transit technology vendors, transit agency departments, and external partners.
