Senior Electrical Engineer, Design Studies

Base pay range

$150,000.00/yr - $210,000.00/yr

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for successful completion of assigned projects and for maintaining and improving client relationships. Completion of these functions requires technical competence in primary production roles as well as competence in working with clients and mentoring team members assigned to projects. Assigned projects will include AC and DC transmission line design support studies for utility and commercial clients.

Studies will include the following:

• Insulation coordination for AC and DC applications (lightning, switching surge/bipole failure, and contamination performance)
• TRV analysis
• Steady state unbalance and transposition studies
• Single pole reclosing and associated design (secondary arc current)
• NESC clearance studies
• Optical shield wire sizing (and Coulomb rating)
• Lightning performance prediction
• Corona performance prediction
• Corrosion analysis and mitigation
• Finite-element electric/magnetic field analysis
• Resonance studies/mitigation
• Electric losses and economic considerations (net present value, etc.)

The qualities of someone in this engineering position requires an individual who has experience participating in the proposal writing process, as well as enjoys customer contact to assist in developing new opportunities. This person must be able to self-manage, with a strong conceptualization ability and strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills – including the capability to explain complex technical issues at a variety of levels to decision-makers and project teams. This senior engineer will need to identify knowledge gaps within our existing production teams and will be expected to assist and/or guide the development and revision of internal calculations, tools, and methodologies. The successful applicant must be willing to mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to training material.

Successful candidates must be willing to travel on occasion and work successfully in a customer focused, project-oriented environment.

Required Education/Experience

• A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is required
• Twelve (12) + years of industry experience performing studies in technical disciplines described above for AC systems up to and including EHV and DC lines (where applicable)
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills including proposal writing, report writing, and other technical writing
• Experience with ATP, PSCAD, DigSILENT, EPRI T-Flash, SWRATE, CAFEP, POLARIS-EMF, I2G LPE, CDEGS, EMT-RV, CAPE, Aspen OneLineror equivalent software packages

Desired Education/Experience

• MSEE or PhD
• Professional registration is not required; however, preference is given to applicants who are registered professional engineers (P.E., P. Eng.)
• Strong understanding of fundamental electrical engineering principles, including but not limited to electromagnetics and their impacts on power systems.
• Preference is also given to applicants with experience in customer focused engineering projects in the technical areas above
• Experience with COMSOL Multiphysics software and or Polaris-EMF
• Experience with Python programming language
• Active participation in industry associations (e.g., CIGRE, IEEE, IEC) through WG and leadership roles
• Drive to make the power industry better through knowledge sharing through conference presentations and White Paper development

Location: This position is open to 100% remote or hybrid work options. Preferred locations are Oregon, Arizona, and New York.

Compensation:

• Salary range: $150,000 – $210,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
