Job description

Brunel is recruiting Senior Electrical Engineers to work in Houston, TX with our major energy client.

The role will primarily focus on front-end project development, feasibility, design, and FEED activities rather than field construction or plant operations.

The position will focus on electrical systems associated with thermal power generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), microgrids, and other energy infrastructure projects serving front-of-the-meter, behind-the-meter, and islanded applications.

The engineer will work closely with project developers, OEMs, EPC contractors, consultants, utilities, and internal stakeholders to evaluate project opportunities and reduce technical risk.

Responsibilities:

Support the development and evaluation of electrical system designs for power generation projects, including:

  • Plant auxiliary power systems
  • Medium-voltage and high-voltage distribution systems
  • Electrical equipment layouts

Evaluate and support the selection of major electrical equipment, including:

  • Generators
  • Generator step-up transformers
  • Power transformers
  • Switchgear
  • Motor control centers
  • Protective relays
  • Electrical balance-of-plant systems

Review electrical engineering studies, including:

  • Load flow
  • Grounding
  • Protection coordination
  • Arc flash
  • Dynamic stability
  • Support load and generation interconnection activities, including the review of ISO and consultant studies, utility requirements, and interconnection agreements.
  • Evaluate potential power generation and energy infrastructure projects for investment, acquisition, or development.
  • Support feasibility studies, technology evaluations, design reviews, and FEED activities.
  • Review substation and switchyard designs, protection and control systems, metering systems, SCADA systems, communication networks, and grid integration requirements.
  • Develop and review technical specifications and scopes of work for OEMs, EPC contractors, consultants, equipment suppliers, and other contractors.
  • Support technical bid evaluations, vendor evaluations, equipment selection, and contractor selection.
  • Manage technical responsibilities across multiple projects simultaneously, setting priorities based on project needs and deadlines.
  • Provide project execution support during feasibility, FEED, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, energization planning, and commissioning activities when needed.
  • Coordinate with mechanical engineers and other project stakeholders regarding plant integration, major equipment interfaces, controls, and operational requirements.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 10 years of experience in power generation, utility infrastructure, industrial power systems, or related energy projects.
  • Strong understanding of medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Experience with substations, switchyards, generators, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and electrical balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Experience reviewing electrical studies and engineering deliverables for utility-scale projects.
  • Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NFPA, NESC, and applicable utility requirements for power generation facilities.
  • Experience supporting multiple phases of the project lifecycle, including development, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and support multiple projects at the same time.
  • Experience working with EPC contractors, project developers, consultants, utilities, OEMs, vendors, and other external contractors.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineer license. A PE is helpful because it may demonstrate hands-on technical experience, but it is not required.
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with gas turbines or thermal power generation.
  • Experience with BESS, microgrids, renewable integration, or hybrid generation facilities.
  • Experience with battery storage systems supporting data centers.
  • Experience with load and generation interconnection processes.
  • Working knowledge of thermal power plant systems and major mechanical power generation equipment.
