Job summary

Stealth Manufacturing Startup in Pittsburgh, PA is seeking a founding team design engineer to join on-site. You'd be our first dedicated design engineer, working directly with the founder and senior advisors.

Own end-to-end design of our first product family (electromagnetic, dielectric, thermal, mechanical), meet UL/IEEE/federal efficiency requirements, drive certification, take designs from prototype to listing, and enable manufacturability while growing the team as we scale.

Qualifications

• 5+ years designing power equipment (transformers, reactors, insulation)
• Strong high-voltage insulation and test fundamentals
• Familiar with IEEE and UL product standards
• Able to build calculation packages from first principles using FEA or equivalent tools
• Builder mindset: see designs on a factory floor, not just slides

Responsibilities

• End-to-end design of first product family: electromagnetic, dielectric, thermal, mechanical
• Ensure designs meet UL, IEEE, and federal efficiency requirements and own certification documentation
• Take designs from prototype through type testing and third-party listing
• Design for manufacturability, collaborate with vendors and suppliers
• Grow the engineering team as we scale from first article to full production

Job description

We're a venture-backed startup building new American manufacturing capacity for critical electrical equipment - products at the center of one of the most supply-constrained markets in the US grid. We're funded, our first product family is defined, and we're standing up operations in Pittsburgh, PA.

This is a founding-team role. You'd be our first dedicated design engineer, working directly with the founder (a hardware startup veteran and former Tier 1 engineering director) and senior industry advisors with decades of design and manufacturing experience.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN

• End-to-end design of our first product family: electromagnetic, dielectric, thermal, and mechanical
• Designing to meet the relevant UL, IEEE, and federal efficiency requirements - and owning the calculation packages and test documentation behind certification
• Taking designs from first prototype through type testing and third-party listing
• Design for manufacturability, working hand-in-hand with equipment vendors and material suppliers
• Growing the engineering team as we scale from first article to full production

WHAT YOU BRING

• 5+ years designing power equipment - wound magnetic components (transformers, reactors), insulation systems, or comparable electrical hardware
• Strong high-voltage insulation and test fundamentals: dielectric withstand, partial discharge, thermal behavior
• Working fluency with IEEE and UL product standards and federal efficiency regulations
• Comfort building calculation packages from first principles, backed by FEA or equivalent tools
• A builder's mentality - you want to see your designs on a factory floor, not in a slide deck

NICE TO HAVE

• Experience taking a product through UL or other third-party listing
• Startup or new-product-introduction (NPI) experience
• Familiarity with coil winding and related manufacturing processes

COMPENSATION & DETAILS

• $140,000-190,000 base, depending on experience
• Health coverage and flexible PTO
• On-site in Pittsburgh, PA; relocation support considered for the right candidate
