Job summary

Johnson Controls seeks a Principal Electrical Applications Engineer to design and optimize electrical systems for advanced HVAC chillers in commercial and data-center settings. You will ensure NEC/UL code compliance and provide detailed power distribution layouts, one-line diagrams, and control schematics.

The role is onsite at our Advanced Development and Engineering Center in New Freedom, PA, with an alternative in San Antonio, TX. Travel up to 20% for site visits and training is expected.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in electrical applications engineering.

Responsibilities

• Provide pre-sale electrical engineering support to sales and customers.
• Develop and review electrical system designs for HVAC chiller applications (power distribution, one-line diagrams, control schematics).
• Apply NEC and UL codes to ensure compliant, safe solutions.
• Perform calculations (wire sizing, ampacity, short circuit analysis, component sizing).
• Support motor control systems including VFDs and starters.
• Collaborate with product engineering, contract engineering, and manufacturing teams.

What you will do

Johnson Controls is seeking a highly skilled Principal Electrical Applications Engineer to support the application, design, and sale of advanced HVAC chiller systems. This role is critical in delivering electrically compliant, high-performance solutions for commercial and mission-critical environments, including data centers.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in electrical systems, power distribution, and electrical code compliance and will serve as a key technical partner to sales, engineering, and product teams. This position plays a vital role in translating customer requirements into robust, safe, and optimized electrical designs.

This position is onsite at our Advanced Development and Engineering Center in New Freedom, PA. An alternative location is San Antonio, TX. Candidates should be commuting distance to either of these facilities, or open to relocation. Various relocation packages are available.

How you will do it

• Provide pre-sale electrical engineering support to internal sales teams and external customers
• Developand review electrical system designs for HVAC chiller applications, including:
• Power distribution layouts
• One-line diagrams and control schematics
• Equipment interface and integration
• Applyand interpret NEC, UL, and applicable regulatory codes to ensure compliant solutions
• Performdetailed engineering calculations, including:
• Wire sizing and ampacity
• Overcurrent protection and short circuit analysis
• Electrical component sizing (breakers, fuses, transformers, contactors)
• Supportapplication of motor control systems, including VFDs, soft starters, and across-the-line starters
• Collaboratewith product engineering, contract engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure accurate execution of electrical designs
• Evaluateproject specifications and propose customized electrical solutions to meet customer requirements
• Troubleshootand resolve field electrical issues, commissioning challenges, and compliance questions
• Provideexpertise on power quality, grounding, harmonics, and system protection strategies
• Developand maintain technical documentation, standards, and application tools
• Deliver training and technical guidance to internal teams and field personnel
• Interfacewith suppliers to support electrical component selection and cost estimation
• Participatein product development initiatives with a focus on electrical architecture and compliance

What you will need

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience.
• Knowledge of refrigeration systems.
• Able to travel up to 20% for factory visits, customer site visits and field visits related to training.

Preferred

• Commercial HVAC industry experience.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $90,000 - $125,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
