Job summary

Duke Energy is seeking a senior EHS consultant to lead environmental, health and safety initiatives across regional gas sites. You will develop advanced programs, evaluate compliance, and partner with facilities to mitigate risks while aligning with corporate objectives.

The role covers sites such as Sutton, HF Lee, Wayne County and Wetherspoon, with 25-50% travel and the need to work independently with limited supervision on complex projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, health and safety, science or related field.
  • 6 years of related experience; or 10 years with HS Diploma/GED in lieu of degree.
  • Experience with environmental or safety programs and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze advanced-level information to recommend management actions.
  • Monitor EHS practices to ensure regulatory and company policy compliance.
  • Develop and maintain procedures for environmental/safety programs.
  • Provide consultation on EHS programs and regulatory changes.
  • Collaborate with internal/external teams and advisory committees.
  • Support tracking of regulatory changes and industry standards.
  • Travel to field locations as required (25-50%).

This is the career/senior level of the EHS Consulting classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in environmental, health, and / or safety areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. This is a regional role covering Gas Plants: Sutton, HF Lee, Wayne County and Wetherspoon. STAR Sites: Cape Fear and HF Lee.

Responsibilities
  • Knowledgeable of the organization, procedures and assigned customers and analyzes and understands advanced-level information, past practices and business objectives to make appropriate recommendations to management/assigned customers.
  • Monitors the practices of assigned organizational EHS area to facilitate compliance with company and/or regulatory policies and requirements in which to mitigate risks.
  • Examples include providing advanced-leveled regulatory-required and internal environmental or safety reports, advanced-leveled support assigned environmental or safety training programs, advanced-leveled support with the development and maintenance of procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental or safety laws and regulations, and to ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance and helping track regulatory changes, legislative activities and industry standards.
  • Researches, develops, and/or evaluates advanced-level programs, policies or activities within the discipline they are assigned which have moderate impact or level of complexity; solves a range of moderate problems and develops solutions using standard-moderate procedures.
  • Provides some advanced level of information/consultation to management/assigned customers on existing EHS programs and policies.
  • Examples include serving as an career expert for higher-level technical programs and compliance issues and supports company’s environmental or safety goals, strategies, programs and processes.
  • The incumbent develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental or safety laws and regulations.
  • Ensures that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance.
  • Assists with tracking advanced-level regulatory changes, advance-level legislative activities and advance-level industry standards and assists with identifying needed changes to facility’s compliance programs.
  • Works with federal, state and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws.
  • Supports Duke Energy on various internal/external industry committees and teams.
  • Develops positive working relationships with peers, customers, employees and management to effectively complete work activities.

  • The ideal candidates will bring outstanding interpersonal abilities, including strong influencing and listening skills that foster effective collaboration across all levels of the organization.
  • 5 plus years work experience in power generation or transmission/distribution operations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety practices
  • A collaborative spirit is key, as is the ability to work with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to reach common goals.
Working Conditions
  • Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
  • Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard
  • Outside work during all seasons.
  • Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.
  • Field, work site, facility visitation required.
  • Vehicle travel involved to field location, typical travel safety factors
