And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The Photo department at The Times is seeking a versatile and experienced journalist with excellent news judgment, an elevated aesthetic and strong management skills to join our leadership team. The primary functions of the Senior Editor, Weekend News Manager for Photo are to supervise a team of photo editors across multiple coverage areas and timezones, coordinate coverage, staffing and presentation decisions, especially for breaking news and be the liaison to the senior editor for news who drives the report through the weekend.

You will oversee live visual coverage launched over the weekend, including stills and video shot by photographers, guiding the commissioning and editing for visual presentations connected to weekend news events. You and those you supervise will be responsible for considering all presentation formats for the photography you commission and research, prioritizing mobile display and cutting edge digital formats. You will work productively with staff photographers, freelance photographers, wire services, agencies and all other sources of images, as well as editors, designers, and reporters in the newsroom.

The current expectation for this full-time role is a Thursday-Sunday schedule. This is a hybrid position and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the work of desk editors, photographers and photo editors during weekends, in coordination with Photo’s Assistant Editor for Digital.
  • Assign and top edit visual presentations, including stacks, tappers, homescreen promotions and live blog editing connected to weekend news events.
  • Coordinate the homepage and live presentation of breaking news as well as planned news events that fall on weekends.
  • Prepare homepage presentations for major enterprise, weekend posters and panel artwork as needed.
  • Bring in additional photo staffing as needed on breaking news.
  • Weigh in on standards, legal and ethical questions that arise.
  • Be responsible for determining whether and when visual pieces are published, and identifying the most suitable presentation format.
  • Engage in dialogue with critical stakeholders on breaking news stories, including colleagues on Home and in Video to collaborate and coordinate coverage and presentation.
  • On occasion, collaborate with editors in the Reporter Video unit to coordinate video that highlights the work and expertise of our journalists and visual journalists in the field.
  • Supervise and give feedback to editors in editing, sequencing and producing multimedia pieces in a variety of formats.
  • Undertake editorial work on occasion as needed to familiarize with and explore formats, contributing to coverage in live news vehicles, home screen presentations, Express stories, and breaking/after hours news.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • This role reports to Photo’s Assistant Editor, Digital.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience as a visual editor and/or visual journalist in a newsroom or equivalent.
  • Extensive experience assigning and directing photographers in the field in a variety of circumstances.
  • Familiarity with collecting and editing photo, audio and video.
  • Substantial knowledge of the photographic landscape and an array of image handling and editing software and workflows.
  • A history of innovation regarding the visual representation of journalism, as demonstrated in a portfolio of work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong technical skills and a facility for learning new technologies.
  • A passion for visual storytelling and breaking news, feature and enterprise journalism.
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects on a variety of timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience delivering high quality visual work on deadline.
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends responding to breaking news as needed.
