Senior Editor, Newsletters - National Geographic

The Senior Editor for Newsletters is a conversational editor and newsletter enthusiast responsible for supporting National Geographic’s Newsletter Manager and the entire editorial newsletter suite. He/she curates, edits, and produces the best of our digital storytelling for millions of daily readers. This role ensures content is curated based on data-informed decisions to drive engagement and subscriptions.

The ideal candidate assists in creating newsletter lineups from planning through execution. They uphold Nat Geo’s journalistic standards, are selective about story promotion, intentional with content packaging, and creative with click-worthy text. They should understand how content is consumed on digital platforms and how to optimize it for the newsletter audience, with a passion for engaging and growing National Geographic’s readership.

While collaborating with editors across the Digital team, the leader will also prioritize publishing initiatives supporting the National Geographic Society, National Geographic Channel, and The Walt Disney Company as needed.

Responsibilities:

  1. Plan newsletter story selection based on target audience and business priorities; execute production of daily editorial newsletters.
  2. Write engaging headlines and supporting text, curate photos and links, and create quizzes or other engagement tools to enhance storytelling and brand engagement. Coordinate with marketing on daily production and strategies to increase subscriber engagement and retention.
  3. Track newsletter performance against key indicators, communicate results, and plan future editorial content with internal teams.
  4. Collaborate with National Geographic Society, Channel, National Geographic Live, and other teams to align newsletter content with company priorities.

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience in writing, editing, and producing digital content, preferably with newsletter curation/editing experience.
  • Proficiency in digital writing, copy editing, and knowledge of AP Style or equivalent.
  • Experience in fast-paced editorial environments with digital best practices, especially for email platforms, is preferred.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.

Preferred Experience:

  • Digital publishing and newsletter-specific production.
  • Basic HTML, digital content management systems, and proficiency with Adobe products.

*This role is based in our Washington, DC office, working in-office 4 days a week (Monday – Thursday) and from home on Fridays.

The salary range for this position in Washington, D.C. is $94,200 to $126,200 annually. Actual offers will consider internal equity, geographic location, experience, and skills, and may include bonuses or incentives, along with comprehensive benefits.
