Qualifications

  • 5 to 7 years of editing experience with a commercial daily news organization (digital or print).
  • Demonstrated ability to edit a wide range of stories with speed and accuracy.
  • Experience assigning stories and managing content production.
  • Strong source-building skills.
  • Experience using AI tools.
  • Excellent news judgment.
  • Experience interpreting public documents, filings, and data.
  • Ability to multitask, manage deadlines, and respond quickly to developing stories.

Responsibilities

  • Editing a variety of stories including breaking news, features, enterprise pieces, and coverage of AI, innovation, research, experiential learning, and campus life
  • Ensuring stories are clear, engaging, and accessible to readers
  • Crafting compelling, SEO-friendly headlines and captions
  • Working closely with reporters to evaluate and refine story pitches, shape coverage, and maintain high standards of accuracy
  • Helping reporters develop reliable sources and relationships across the university community
  • Collaborating with media relations, social media, and multimedia teams to enhance stories with data, graphics, photos, and video
  • Monitoring analytics and audience metrics to inform reporting and follow-up coverage
  • Thorough fact-checking and adherence to editorial guidelines

The newsroom covers innovation across the university's academic and research enterprise, including artificial intelligence, health, engineering, computer science, data science, and the humanities, as well as faculty expert commentary on timely national and global topics. The operation spans campus coverage across the U.S., UK, and Canada and is highly data-informed with ambitious goals and exacting standards.

The ideal candidate is an adaptable journalist with experience at top-tier commercial news organizations who can drive innovative storytelling, set the news agenda, and manage content production. This is a fully on-site position with routine after-hours, weekend, and holiday work required.
