Description

ABOUT THE ROLE

Fast Company’s digital team is looking for a senior editor to shape and lead the website’s Work Life section, with the goal of strengthening and nurturing key audiences. Working with editors, writers, and freelance contributors, this editor will conceive, assign, edit and package distinctive original workplace reporting for the Work Life section of FastCompany.com and lead the overall editorial vision for the section.

The Senior Editor will manage a staff editor and staff writer and will contribute across the publication in recognition programs, live events, and other editorial projects.

The ideal candidate is a careful, creative journalist fascinated by the ever-changing landscape of the workplace with the appetite to work in a fast-paced newsroom. They have experience leading a section or a publication, managing a team of staff and freelancers, and a knack for finding, growing and managing relationship with a variety of writers. The senior editor will also be adept at deploying SEO tactics and other strategies to grow and reach new audiences and convert subscriptions.

The Senior Editor will work a 3-day hybrid schedule (Tuesday-Thursday onsite) based in the New York City office. Option for fully remote for the right candidate.

This is a position covered under the Writers Guild of America East Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary range: $88,500 - $120,400 + bonus eligible. Compensation may vary based on relevant experience, skills, industry, and education.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • Assign and edit several articles a day for the Work Life vertical to drive consistent, resilient audience growth.
  • Manage and mentor Work Life’s Staff Editor and Staff Writer.
  • Cultivate new and existing contributors and freelancers tied to topics and themes we think will reach key existing audiences and help us bring in new and diverse audiences.
  • Manage and seek out other content opportunities including book excerpts, and syndication partners and seek new opportunities to bring fresh perspectives from trusted sites to our audiences.
  • Represent Fast Company at internal and external events and in media appearances.
  • Identify growth opportunities for both traffic and premium subscriptions. Help define and prioritize experiments that accelerate growth and engagement.
  • Curate and write a weekly Work Life newsletter.
  • Collaborate and contribute across departments on special projects.
Qualifications

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Five or more years of experience writing, assigning and/or editing stories for a daily website, ideally with experience in the workplace or business news space.
  • Experience leading a team and managing both staff and freelance writers and editors.
  • Superior writing and editing skills, and an ability to conceive and package imaginative, innovative stories and find fresh angles that differentiate Fast Company from other sources of workplace coverage.
  • A sophisticated understanding of the dynamics at play in the digital world, with insight into the behaviors of readers and Fast Company fans and followers across platforms.
  • A diverse, extensive network of writers and the ability to bring new, diverse voices to the site on a regular basis.
  • A strong point of view on how to engage and reach new readers and grow both traffic and subscription audiences.
  • The ability to juggle multiple projects under tight deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced collaborative environment, with exceptional organizational skills.
