Job summary

Rinker Design Associates (RDA) is seeking a talented Drainage Engineer with 7–12 years of experience to join our Transportation team in Manassas, VA. You will contribute to the analysis and design of drainage and stormwater systems for roadway projects, working with project managers and multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 7–12 years of drainage/stormwater/water resources experience.
  • Professional Engineer license or Virginia reciprocity eligibility.
  • Experience with VDOT projects and Drainage Manual.
  • Knowledge of FEMA/DEQ/AASHTO standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and design for transportation projects.
  • Prepare drainage reports, stormwater calculations, and supporting documentation.
  • Design storm sewers, culverts, channels, and erosion/ sediment control measures.
  • Develop plans using HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, MicroStation, and OpenRoads Designer.
  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies to support delivery.
  • Ensure designs comply with VDOT, DEQ, FEMA, and local/federal regulations.
  • Participate in field investigations and provide construction support.

Description

Rinker Design Associates (RDA) is seeking a talented Drainage Engineer with 7–12 years of experience to join our Transportation team. In this role, you'll contribute to the analysis and design of drainage and stormwater systems for a variety of roadway and infrastructure projects. You'll work closely with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality solutions that enhance safety, mobility, and environmental stewardship.

What You'll Do:
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and design for transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare drainage reports, stormwater management calculations, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Design storm sewer systems, culverts, channels, and erosion and sediment control measures.
  • Develop plans and models using HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, MicroStation, and OpenRoads Designer.
  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies to support project delivery.
  • Ensure designs comply with VDOT, DEQ, FEMA, and applicable local and federal regulations.
  • Participate in field investigations and provide construction support as needed.
  • Collaborate with roadway, traffic, and environmental teams to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Assist with proposal preparation and provide technical guidance to junior engineering staff.
What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • 7–12 years of experience in drainage, stormwater, or water resources engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain Virginia licensure through reciprocity.
  • Experience with VDOT transportation projects and familiarity with the VDOT Drainage Manual.
  • Knowledge of FEMA, DEQ, and AASHTO standards and regulations.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency with industry software tools, including:
    • HEC-RAS (1D & 2D)
    • HEC-HMS
    • SWMM / InfoSWMM
    • MicroStation / OpenRoads Designer
    • GIS (ArcGIS) and other drainage design tools
