  • Salary: $52,284 - $61,707

Distinguishing Features of the Class

A Senior Drafting Technician performs complex drafting and computation work, including preparing rough and finished drawings by hand or CAD. They are responsible for engineering drafting tasks, using various techniques, procedures, instruments, and manuals. They work with considerable independence, selecting appropriate references and resolving problems previously encountered. They utilize drafting tools and follow departmental policies. At the senior level, supervision is provided by a professional engineer or architect, and they may supervise Drafting Technicians.

Typical Work Activities
  1. Prepares designs and plans for parks, playgrounds, golf courses, buildings, structures, landscapes, etc., by hand or CAD.
  2. Prepares drawings following sketches or instructions, determines details and scale, and makes mathematical computations.
  3. Prepares, designs, and plans for roadway pavements.
  4. Prepares plans and drawings for water mains, sewer, and storm drains, including computations.
  5. Prepares specifications and cost estimates.
  6. Reviews plans prepared by contractors for compliance.
  7. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Characteristics
  • Knowledge of drafting procedures and methods.
  • Knowledge of drafting instruments, CAD, and standards.
  • Ability to prepare neat and accurate drawings.
  • Ability to make simple mathematical computations.
  • Ability to make cost estimates.
  • Physical condition suitable for the position.
Minimum Qualifications

Promotional: Continuous and permanent status as a Drafting Technician in a city department for one year.

Open Competitive:

  • (A) Associate’s Degree in Architectural Technology, Drafting-Mechanical, or related field.
  • (B) High School diploma or GED with drafting coursework and two years of full-time drafting experience.
  • (C) An equivalent combination of the above qualifications.

Acceptable equivalents include certificates in Mechanical Drafting and Design or Architectural Drawing from an accredited institute.
