Job summary

Whirlwind Steel in Houston, TX is seeking a Senior Drafting Lead to guide complex drafting projects and drive improvements in quality, efficiency, and innovation. You will serve as a subject matter expert, supporting BIM tools and cross-functional initiatives across the drafting department.

The role requires 9–11 years of drafting experience in metal buildings or structural steel, and strong leadership and communication abilities to mentor team members and ensure deliverables meet project

Qualifications

• 9-11 years of drafting experience in metal building or structural steel environments.
• Mastery of CAD, MBS, Tekla, and emerging detailing technologies.
• Strong project management skills.
• Demonstrated leadership capability within technical teams.
• Proven ability to resolve complex detailing issues.
• Ability to implement tools or processes that improve efficiency.
• Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead drafting for complex projects, including MBMA Class 9 and 10 structures.
• Resolve advanced detailing challenges, including hybrid structures.
• Lead department-wide improvements in drafting quality and efficiency.
• Introduce and implement new drafting tools, including BIM integration and automation.
• Represent the drafting department in cross-functional projects and initiatives.
• Lead drafting efforts for cross-departmental initiatives.
• Provide technical guidance and support to other drafters as needed.
• Ensure drafting deliverables meet company standards and project requirements.
