Job summary

Zanskar, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, seeks a Senior Distributed Systems Engineer to design and maintain a next-generation multi-physics well-targeting engine. The role blends software engineering with scientific research, emphasizing scalable, fault-tolerant architectures.

You will work with geophysicists and engineers to translate complex subsurface models into robust, distributed systems, mentoring peers and driving technology choices that accelerate geothermal discovery.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of software engineering experience in scientific or heavy domain.
• Experience leading design of distributed computing systems.
• Fluency in Python and SQL.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP/AWS) and Kubernetes.
• CI/CD using GitHub Actions or similar.
• Experience with data storage (RDBMS and cloud blob storage).

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of a reliable distributed compute system for geological research teams.
• Scale and migrate the system for reliability and performance.
• Collaborate with geophysicists, geoscientists, seismologists and engineers to solve hard problems.
• Teach and share distributed-systems knowledge within the team.
