Position Summary

The Senior Distinguished I, Data Scientist is a visionary leader who will drive the development and application of GenAI and data science capabilities to optimize customer service experiences at Walmart. As a subject matter expert in AI and data science, this hands-on leader will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies that leverage GenAI to optimize customer service experiences for both Walmart customers and call center agents. You will lead a team of data scientists and collaborate with cross-functional teams including dedicated engineering, product, and business teams.

About Team:

The Customer Care Technology team builds best-in-class customer service experiences for hundreds of millions of Walmart customers and customer service agents globally. We are a group of software engineers, data scientists, and machine learning experts pushing the boundaries of GenAI technology in complex enterprise applications. The Customer Care Technology team is part of the Enterprise Business Systems organization in Walmart Global Tech. We partner with our product, business, and UX teams to drive significant measurable business impact. Our mission is to help customers save money and live better.

What You'll Do
  • Drive the strategic vision and execution for the GenAI and data science team.
  • Accelerate the adoption of AI/ML advances in the entire customer care domain, from customer-facing GenAI chat and voice bots to agent assist experiences and large scale data analysis.
  • Lead hands-on experiments and prototypes. Provide strategic direction for problem solving.
  • Hire, mentor and grow science and engineering talent.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, collaboration, and risk-taking.
  • Work cross-functionally across various engineering, product, UX, and business teams. Drive consensus and bring ideas to production.
  • Serve as a team expert on changes in industry trends, products, and other advances, and apply this knowledge to influence product needs.
What You'll Bring

PHD or master’s degree in computer science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Data Science, or a similar field.

  • 8+ years of experience in ML, AI, and data science.
  • Strong track record of solving complicated business problems using GenAI and data.
  • Profound knowledge of data science and machine learning, Natural Language Processing, LLM, and GenAI.
  • Exemplary hands-on expertise in data analysis tools and programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex data in a simple, understandable manner tailored to a wide audience.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and strategic thinking skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 7 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 2: Master’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 5 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 3: 9 years' experience in an analytics or related field.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Data science, machine learning, optimization models, PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics, Publications or active peer reviewer in related journals or conference.
  • Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
  • Using open source frameworks (for example, scikit learn, tensorflow, torch).
  • We value candidates with a background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
