Job summary

Manulife Financial Corporation seeks a senior tax leader to oversee tax compliance and research for funds and investment products. This role partners with AVP/VP of tax and supervises Senior Tax Managers and Tax Managers to align with department goals.

The position requires extensive knowledge of tax codes, effective communication, and strong analytical skills to manage complex fund tax issues and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • CPA, MST or JD or a minimum of 10+ years of mutual fund tax experience.
  • 7+ years supervision experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of IRS code sections, Treasury Regulations, Revenue Rulings and related guidance.
  • Excellent financial, accounting and tax knowledge.

Job description

Responsible for overseeing the tax compliance and research functions for all funds and investment products. This includes strategic planning and execution of department goals, critical thinking, and implementing company-wide initiatives. This position partners with the AVP and VP of tax to ensure goals are met. Also responsible for directly supervising a working group of Senior Tax Managers and Tax Managers.

Position Responsibilities
Individual Accountabilities
  • Serve as the lead tax advisor for mutual fund tax matters, interpreting new tax legislation, regulatory guidance, and industry developments, and determining impacts on funds and shareholders.
  • Partner with Portfolio Managers, Compliance, Legal, Finance, and Operations teams to address fund tax issues, distribution planning, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide expert guidance on complex tax compliance matters, including qualification testing, RIC requirements, and resolution of tax-related risks.
  • Act as a key resource for business partners on tax implications of new products, fund strategies, and business initiatives.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor Tax Managers while overseeing vendor relationships and driving departmental projects.
Shared Accountabilities
  • Ensure all mutual funds maintain favorable RIC status and comply with IRS, SEC, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee fund tax reporting, distribution calculations, excise tax planning, corporate actions, and complex book-to-tax treatments.
  • Monitor tax law changes, assess business impacts, and implement necessary updates to policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Provide leadership on complex tax reporting and compliance issues, including FIN 48 documentation and foreign tax reclaim activities.
  • Support departmental planning, budgeting, and operational objectives while enhancing tax reporting policies and governance practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
  • CPA, MST/ JD or a minimum of 10+ years of mutual fund tax experience and 7+ years supervision experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant IRS code sections, Treasury Regulations, Revenue Rulings, and other interpretive rulings or case law and their effect on Regulated Investment Companies and their shareholders.
  • Strong organizational, strategic, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate tax issues to a varied audience
  • Excellent financial, accounting, and tax knowledge is required.
  • Advanced tax research skills are required.
  • Organizational skills are necessary to meet deadlines, prioritize projects, and process several projects simultaneously and to work under the direction of multiple individuals

Salary range is expected to be between

$128,550.00 USD - $222,820.00 USD

Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
