About Lightsource bp

Lightsource bp is on a mission to become a global leader in onshore renewables, building on our proven track record in solar development.

For more than a decade, we have worked to diversify how the world is powered through sustainable and responsible renewable energy. We safely deliver affordable, reliable, utility-scale renewable energy and storage solutions that support decarbonization, sustainable growth, and energy security.

Lightsource bp was fully acquired by bp in 2024.

About the Role

The Senior Director, Power Optimization and Market Analytics will lead the team responsible for analyzing, structuring, and executing merchant revenue opportunities across Lightsource bp’s U.S. portfolio. This includes energy, capacity, Renewable Energy Certificates, ancillary services, and other commodities.

This leader will oversee the U.S. power markets analytics function, establishing high analytical standards and providing decision-quality insights for more than 3 GW of operational assets and an expanding development pipeline. The role will also lead revenue optimization modeling for operating assets and battery energy storage system revenue analysis for development-stage projects.

As a senior subject matter expert, this position will provide leadership on RTO and ISO markets, FERC regulations, energy policy, and other developments affecting the value of utility-scale solar and storage assets.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead the team responsible for structuring commercial transactions involving merchant energy, capacity, RECs, ancillary services, and other commodities across multiple regions and contract tenors.
  • Lead revenue optimization modeling for operational assets and BESS revenue modeling for development projects.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies for merchant and partially contracted revenue streams.
  • Negotiate bilateral commodity contracts and commercial arrangements with utilities, trading companies, and other wholesale market counterparties.
  • Oversee revenue management and optimization across the operational portfolio.
  • Lead negotiations for third-party scheduling, market participation, and asset optimization services.
  • Develop strategies to manage Day-Ahead and Real-Time spreads, basis risk, congestion, curtailment, and other market exposures.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and identify opportunities to improve revenue and risk-adjusted returns.
  • Present revenue performance, market outlooks, portfolio risks, and optimization strategies at quarterly board meetings and senior leadership reviews.
  • Evaluate developments across U.S. power markets, energy policy, RTO and ISO rules, and FERC proceedings.
  • Partner with Development, Finance, Asset Management, Legal, Commercial, and other teams to support investment and portfolio decisions.
  • Develop innovative market pricing structures and commercial strategies for solar and storage projects.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing team of power markets and analytics professionals.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, energy, business, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience in power markets, energy trading, commercial optimization, market analytics, origination, or a related field.
  • Experience in solar, storage, renewable energy, an independent power producer, a utility, or the broader clean-energy industry.
  • Strong knowledge of wholesale power market structures and revenue streams, including energy, capacity, RECs, and ancillary services.
  • Experience evaluating and optimizing merchant revenue opportunities for power generation or storage assets.
  • Experience negotiating transactions with utilities, trading companies, scheduling coordinators, or other energy-market counterparties.
  • Strong understanding of RTO and ISO markets, FERC regulations, and policies affecting renewable generation and storage.
  • Knowledge of merchant risk management, hedging, congestion, basis risk, and Day-Ahead and Real-Time market strategies.
  • Understanding of renewable project development, business development, financing, operations, and asset management.
  • Experience leading a team and managing direct reports.
  • Strong commercial judgment and the ability to translate complex analysis into clear recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to executives or boards.
What Will Help You Succeed
  • Strong commercial acumen and knowledge of energy markets and commodity products.
  • A genuine interest in evolving market trends, particularly those affecting utility-scale solar and storage.
  • The ability to navigate complex and ambiguous business challenges.
  • A collaborative and results-oriented leadership style.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to prioritize competing demands and operate effectively with limited supervision.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced and evolving business environment.
We Offer
