Job description

San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY, United States (US Remote)

About Mux

Mux is video for developers. Our mission is to democratize video by solving the hard problems developers face when building video: video encoding and streaming (Mux Video), video monitoring (Mux Data), and more. Video is a huge part of people’s lives, and we want to help make it better.

We’re committed to building a healthy team that welcomes diverse backgrounds and experiences. We want people who care about our mission, are ready to grow, believe in our values (from Be Human to Turn Customers Into Fans), and want to improve the people around them.

You’ll join a tight-knit team with experience at places like Google, YouTube, Twitch, Reddit, Zencoder, Fastly, and more. Our founders previously started (and sold) Zencoder, an early leader in cloud video technology, and authored Video.js, the biggest HTML5 video player on the web. We organize Demuxed, the premiere conference for video engineers in the world.

We’re backed by top investors like Coatue, Accel, Andreessen Horowitz, and Y Combinator. You’ll get to work with amazing companies: hundreds of startups, plus Strava, Patreon, Vimeo, Robinhood, PBS, and Equinox. Customers, large and small, love working with us and love our team.

We are building something big together. We’d love to hear from you!

About the Role

The Sr. Director of Strategic Finance will own the financial strategy and analysis that underpins key business decisions at Mux. You will develop a rigorous understanding of the drivers behind our operating model, manage business performance, and influence investment decisions. This role demands a hands-on leader ready to drive high-impact cross-functional projects—from pricing changes to marketing spend initiatives to M&A. You will own end-to-end financial planning processes, forecasts and financial models. You will also partner with functional leaders on strategic initiatives to help them achieve their operational goals. You will lead a team that includes business operations, accounting, and deal desk, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency across the team’s workflows using AI tools and best practices. This role will report directly to the CFO and preference for candidates near our major offices (San Francisco, New York), but open to remote applicants with occasional travel.

What You'll Do

  • Strategic Planning & Analysis:
  • Develop a rigorous understanding of the drivers of our operating model to manage business performance, maintain financial forecasts, and influence investment decisions.
  • Lead the development and execution of multi-year financial plans, forecasts, and scenario analyses to support strategic initiatives.
  • Business Partnership & Cross-functional Leadership:
  • Partner with executive leadership, product, and operations teams to integrate financial insights into business strategy and decision-making.
  • Lead cross-functional high-impact projects to drive organic and inorganic growth, including pricing changes, marketing spend optimization, and M&A.
  • Provide structure, analytical support, and accountability to functional leaders on strategic decisions and areas of investment.
  • Financial Planning & Performance Management:
  • Own end-to-end financial planning processes, including headcount planning, revenue and budget forecasts.
  • Oversee the analysis of financial performance, including variance analysis, ROI evaluation, and the identification of cost optimization opportunities.
  • Develop and implement models for evaluating investment opportunities, M&A activity, and strategic partnerships.
  • Identify financial risks and work with key stakeholders to mitigate them, ensuring sound financial practices across the organization.
  • Ensure audit readiness by maintaining robust financial controls, processes, and documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Process Improvement & AI Integration:
  • Identify opportunities for process enhancements in financial reporting and analysis to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Implement best practices in financial planning processes and leverage AI tools to streamline workflows and drive agility in responding to market changes.
  • Team Leadership & Operations Management:
  • Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team that delivers deep analytical insights under tight deadlines.
  • Own the business operations, accounting, and deal desk functions —ensuring these functions operate efficiently and align with our strategic objectives.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CFA is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of finance experience, with a proven track record in strategic planning, financial modeling, and analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience in a high-growth technology company or startup environment.
  • Deep experience with SaaS business models and enterprise sales.
  • Experience working with both subscription-based and usage-based revenue models.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and technologies, and a proven ability to integrate them to improve team processes and workflows.
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills—able to simplify highly complex problems into clear recommendations.
  • Proven leadership capabilities with experience managing and mentoring teams.
  • Analytical Rigor: Develop structured approaches to problem solving, underpinned by data and robust operational/financial models.
  • Operational Mindset: Grounded in reality beyond strategy, with strong instincts for execution.
  • Entrepreneurial: Motivated to thrive in a fast-paced, hypergrowth environment.
  • Cross-Functional Influence: Collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and lead with influence.
  • Strong Communication: Simplify highly complex problems and craft clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Commitment to Mux Values: Embrace our core values – Be Human, Care Obsessively, Turn Customers Into Fans.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
