Job summary

The City of Alexandria, VA is seeking an Assistant Director for the Department of Planning & Zoning to lead department-wide administrative operations, budget and personnel matters, and organizational performance. This senior role reports to the P&Z Director and oversees two units, ensuring responsive, high-performing services for council, boards, and the public.

Ideal candidates have a strong background in planning/public administration, excellent communication, and a track record in budget

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in planning, public administration or related field.
• Master's degree preferred with 5+ years supervisory experience.
• Strong leadership, communication and budget management skills.
• Experience with HR processes and software tools.
• Familiarity with planning, zoning, and policy analysis.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight for department-wide administrative operations, personnel and budget management, procurement, and internal processes.
• Supervise Administrative Services Unit Manager and Boards & Commissions Unit Manager.
• Track progress on annual work plans, prepare quarterly reports, and monitor monthly/annual reporting.
• Coordinate departmental meetings and respond to City Council and City Manager requests.
• Advise on organizational management, budget decisions and project management.
• Support staff development, engagement, and recognition initiatives.
• Attend evening/weekend meetings and represent P&Z to councils and stakeholders.
• Work with City HR and departments to recruit, onboard, and manage personnel.
