Job summary

Strata Clean Energy is seeking a Senior Director of Engineering in Durham, NC to serve as the senior design authority for utility-scale solar and storage projects. You will own the configuration and technology decisions shaping a project from initiation through early-stage design, balancing customer requirements with site constraints and standards to define optimal solutions for competitive EPC bids.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of utility-scale solar and/or storage engineering experience.
• Ownership of full project configuration space including trackers, BOP, civil and geotechnical aspects, PV modules, and storage.
• Strong technical judgment under commercial and schedule pressure.
• Experience leading technical teams and approving design or bid deliverables.

Responsibilities

• Produce and optimize the project design basis using company standards, customer requirements, and project inputs through early-stage design (30%).
• Determine project configuration and technology selection to maximize value and returns.
• Approve engineering designs for bids and internal projects, and produce bid-stage quantity estimates.
• Govern changes to the design basis by evaluating technical merit and maintaining design integrity through construction.
• Collaborate with development, procurement, construction, and discipline engineering teams to ensure buildable designs aligned to goals.
• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, specialists, and designers.
• Drive continuous improvement in design quality, consistency, and throughput.

Job description

The Senior Director of Engineering is our senior design authority for utility-scale solar and storage projects, responsible for the technical design basis that drives each project’s value, cost, and constructability. You will own the configuration and technology decisions that shape a project from initiation through early-stage design. You'll balancing customer requirements, site and interconnection constraints, and company standards to define the right solution for each project and for competitive EPC bids. You will lead a focused, senior team of roughly 8–10 project engineers, technical specialists, and civil designers setting the design basis across the company’s utility-scale project portfolio.

Responsibilities

• Produce and optimize the project design basis using company standards, customer requirements, and project-specific feasibility inputs, through early-stage (30%) design.
• Determine project configuration and technology selection to maximize customer value and project returns.
• Approve engineering designs for competitive bids and internal projects, and produce the associated bid-stage quantity estimates.
• Govern changes to the design basis by evaluating proposed changes on technical merit and maintaining design integrity through construction.
• Partner with development, procurement, construction, and the discipline engineering teams to ensure designs are buildable and aligned to project goals.
• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of project engineers, technical specialists, and designers.
• Drive continuous improvement in design quality, consistency, and throughput.

Desired Experience

• 8+ years of experience in utility-scale solar and/or storage engineering
• Experience in design, estimating, and technology selection at volume
• Ownership of the full project configuration space including, but not limited to trackers, electrical balance of plant, civil and geotechnical considerations, PV modules, and battery storage.
• Strong technical judgment and the confidence to hold a position under commercial and schedule pressure.
• Experience leading technical teams and approving design or bid deliverables.
• PE license preferred.
