Job summary

New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) seeks a Legislative Assistant to support the agency’s engagement with the City Council and to coordinate responses to inquiries from City Hall and other officials.

You will work with senior leadership to develop HPD’s legislative and policy agenda, draft testimony, and prepare briefing materials for hearings and meetings with elected officials, advocates, and stakeholders. A residency requirement applies for NYC residents.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; 4+ years in government housing or related staff work.
• Experience with city legislative issues or intergovernmental affairs preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills essential.
• Ability to manage multiple complex assignments and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and analyze proposed City legislation and coordinate HPD’s responses.
• Develop and advocate for HPD’s City legislative and policy agenda.
• Provide political analysis and strategic advice to leadership.
• Manage inquiries from City Hall, agencies, officials, and constituents.
• Draft and edit public testimony for City Council hearings.
• Prepare briefing materials for meetings with officials and stakeholders.
• Represent HPD at hearings and housing events.
• Coordinate with City Hall on legislative matters.
