ADP is hiring a Sr Director, Application Development - HRO

In this role you will lead a software engineering and quality team for our HRO products and will be responsible for technology strategy, software engineering oversight, code quality, release governance, process improvement, risk mitigation, budget management, platform performance, and hiring. You will lead your team of insourced and outsourced talent and interface with business stakeholders, product, architects, DevOps, QA, support and other engineering teams to ensure the development of software that provides strategic value for the organization.

As an energetic Technical Leader, you’ll take ownership of your platform roadmap and help motivate and focus our organization to deliver strong results.

Leadership Responsibility
  • Inspire and coach engineering managers and team members.

Collaboration
  • Work with business leadership and project management to understand priorities and create automation accordingly.
  • Partner closely with other engineering teams to build innovative and robust end‑to‑end solutions that drive business outcomes.
Technical
  • Strong foundational knowledge of software engineering and familiarity with various technologies including but not limited to Java, Spring, AngularJS, JavaScript, etc.
  • Practical experience in delivering software and services leveraging cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
  • Experience with Salesforce is ideal.
  • Delivering software in an agile and iterative methodology to deliver with speed and quality.
Communication
  • Give feedback (both positive and constructively critical).
  • Communicate clearly and concisely to implement leading/best practices and processes to ensure alignment across the engineering teams.
  • Communicate up, down and out across the business and the technology organization.

  • Know how to work in and out of organizational boundaries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and management of managers/Dev leads responsible for engineering and quality teams and providing overall technical direction.
  • Provide professional development and mentorship to managers and team members.
  • Establish software engineering standards and guidelines for the software engineering organization.
  • Partner closely with the business stakeholders to build solutions that drive outcomes.
  • Conceive team structure and constantly seek opportunities to adjust team structure to maximize agility and efficiency.
  • Champion communications on technology and strategic initiatives.
  • Drive quality through automated testing, release governance and high platform performance.
  • Establish a fun, creative and enjoyable environment balanced with strong collaboration and productivity.
  • Present issues and risks, and their business impact to management in a timely manner with proposed mitigation.
  • Actively seek and remove impediments to team success regardless of where they originate.
  • Human resource contributions associated with the team, including recruiting, hiring, performance evaluation, and coaching.
  • Monitor and manage budget for software engineering teams.
  • Collaborate across multiple business units and functional departments to develop and deploy solutions that address key business initiatives, supporting new revenue opportunities.
  • Inspire the portfolio to strive for innovation, efficiency, continual learning, and a desire to search for new ideas and technologies.
  • Continuously improve software development productivity, quality, predictability, and team morale.
  • Establish culture and processes to attract and retain the best talent in the software and technology space.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Master’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering or related discipline is preferred.
  • 15+ years substantial engineering experience with 10+ years leadership experience in a software development organization.
  • Practical experience working in Agile environments and in product‑focused technology organizations.
  • Experience building distributed engineering teams and working with senior engineering leaders and architects.
  • Excellent team‑building skills with a strong ability to motivate and inspire talented engineers.
  • 7+ years of experience in leadership and managerial capacities with cross‑disciplinary teams including software engineering, infrastructure, security, automated testing, and build tooling.
  • 3+ years of experience with cloud providers.
  • Track record of evolving engineering team capabilities with recognized improvements.
  • Full‑stack software development knowledge – including modern technology stacks, public cloud services, container orchestration and scheduling frameworks, distributed databases, and UI frameworks.
  • Maintain hands‑on interest in current technology trends.
