Job summary

AV is seeking a Mid to Senior Level Safety Engineer to lead safety implementations for directed energy systems on a ground‑based program. The role involves performing FHA/FTA/PHA analyses, risk assessment, and safety documentation, while ensuring DoD and safety standards compliance across multidisciplinary teams.

Ideal candidates have 15 years of relevant experience, strong MBSE/SysML skills, and the ability to obtain a US security clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
• Proficiency in systems modeling tools (e.g., MBSE, SysML), test automation, and data analysis.
• 15 years professional experience with 5 years’ experience in systems engineering with a focus on directed energy systems.
• Experience with high‑powered directed energy systems and directed energy safety protocols.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Conduct FHA, FTA, and PHA analyses to identify hazards.
• Assess risks using quantitative and qualitative methods to support design choices.
• Evaluate failure modes, effects, and criticality in analyses.
• Review system designs, plans, and specifications for safety compliance.
• Prepare SSHA and SAR documentation.
• Ensure compliance with DoD and military safety standards.
• Review contractor documents and change requests for safety implications.
• Work with design, development, and test engineers.
• Communicate safety concerns with government officials and contractors.
• Develop testing protocols for lasers, optical or electrical components and systems.
• Coordinate and conduct integration across mechanical, optical, electrical, and software domains.
• Support risk assessments, failure mode analysis, and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with hardware, software, and test engineers on projects.
• Support integration of laser systems with control electronics and power supplies.
• Participate in design reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions.
