Job summary

Ad Hoc LLC is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to lead DevOps initiatives for public-sector digital services. You will drive cloud infrastructure design, CI/CD pipelines, and security compliance while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with partners and government teams.

You will leverage Terraform/Terragrunt, GitHub Actions, and Argo CD to deliver scalable, reliable software, with a focus on cost, reliability, and performance. This remote role requires US work authorization.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent.
  • Expert-level knowledge in Terraform/Terragrunt, GitHub Actions and Argo CD.
  • Expert-level knowledge in AWS Cloud Services including EKS/Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

  • Consolidate and simplify DevOps tooling and services.
  • Mentor team members within the DevOps discipline.
  • Lead small or temporary projects as needed.
  • Present design documents and diagrams to clients and stakeholders.
  • Design self-directed cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Develop pipelines with automated tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, ArgoCD).
  • Ensure security, SLA, and performance requirements are met.
  • Participate in technical depth interviews with new candidates.

The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

In this role, you will serve as an experienced individual contributor within a team, with the expectation that you will further develop your leadership, guidance and mentoring skills. With minimal oversight from leadership, you will be responsible for supporting the goal of meeting scope, schedule and delivery requirements. A Senior DevOps Engineer impacts the long-term goals of the program, while contributing to the development of the program’s DevOps and software engineering strategy. You may serve as the discipline’s primary lead when working with stakeholders and utilize strong influential skills to drive improvements in software engineering processes and practices.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Strong influential skills to collaborate across teams to consolidate and simplify DevOps tools and services
  • Serves as a mentor to individuals within the team
  • May leads small, less critical, or temporary team structures and projects
  • Presents design documents, system diagrams, etc. to clients, stakeholders, partners, and other engineers
  • Capable of self-directed cloud infrastructure design and pipeline design, including cloud-specific product offerings, and tradeoffs between cost, reliability, and efficiency
  • Builds libraries, modules, and packages for other infrastructure engineers to integrate with their projects
  • Builds cloud infrastructure that supports applications and Improves the broader developer experience for engineers
  • Develops CI/CD processes to help deliver software of higher quality at greater speed
  • Integrates tools to satisfy non-functional requirements such as quality thresholds, security vulnerabilities, and static analysis
  • Builds specific application test and deployment pipelines using automated tooling such as Jenkins, Github Actions, and ArgoCDCircle CI, Gitlab CI
  • Proactively works with our government partners and app teams to ensure that we are shipping software that meets security, SLA, and performance requirements
  • Participates in technical depth interviews with new candidates
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of professional software engineering experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Expertise in key DevOps concepts: installing software, virtualization, containerization, networking, etc.
  • Demonstrates expert-level knowledge in Terraform/Terragrunt
  • Demonstrates expert-level knowledge in GitHub Actions and Argo CD
  • Demonstrates expert-level knowledge in HAProxy/OpenResty
  • Demonstrates expert-level knowledge in AWS Cloud Services, including EKS/Kubernetes
  • U.S. citizenship or current legal authorization to work and reside in the United States without employer sponsorship is required. Candidates must also be able to successfully complete and maintain any required government background investigation as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Comfort level with both DevOps and SRE functions
  • Expertise with observability using Datadog
  • Experience with security tooling using Trivy, Aqua

In support of various state and city equal pay transparency laws, Ad Hoc job descriptions feature the starting range we reasonably expect to pay to candidates who would join our team with little to no need for training on the responsibilities we've outlined above. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility.
