Customer.io is seeking a Senior Developer Experience Engineer to design and evolve SDKs and developer tools used by external developers to integrate with a messaging platform. You will combine hands-on coding with technical leadership, API design, and AI-augmented workflows across Swift, Kotlin, Node, and Go ecosystems.

You’ll own SDK initiatives end-to-end, drive technical direction, manage releases, and partner with product/design to deliver a cohesive developer experience.

Role overview

Join an Integrations team as a Senior Developer Experience Engineer focused on building and evolving the SDKs and developer tools that external developers rely on to integrate with a messaging platform. The role combines hands-on coding with technical leadership, API design, and AI-augmented workflows across multiple language ecosystems. It is a senior, high-ownership position suited to engineers who enjoy working in ambiguous, product-flavored problems.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve multi-platform SDKs (iOS, Android, Node, Go) along with the surrounding developer tooling and documentation support.
• Lead SDK initiatives end to end: set technical direction, write the code, manage releases, and own the outcome.
• Improve SDK delivery infrastructure, including CI pipelines, automated testing, versioning, publishing, and release processes to keep shipping reliable and low-friction.
• Partner with product and design to translate loosely defined goals into a cohesive, well-crafted developer experience.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to support the reliability of the systems you build.
• Use AI agents to make multi-file changes across unfamiliar codebases and languages by scoping tasks, writing prompts, and verifying outputs.
• Maintain strong customer empathy by understanding what integrating engineers actually need and occasionally engaging with them directly.

Requirements

• Expert-level competency in at least one established programming language, with strong software design and API design fundamentals.
• Track record of building and evolving mature, production-quality software, with a clear understanding of how systems fit together and how other developers consume them.
• Strong fluency with current LLMs and agentic coding tools (such as Claude, Cursor, Codex) used to explore unfamiliar codebases, work across languages, and run tasks in parallel or autonomously.
• High autonomy in ambiguous environments: ability to clarify the problem, validate its value, and drive implementation without close direction.
• Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly.
• Ability to work effectively across multiple languages and stacks; prior experience in every supported language (Swift, Kotlin, Node, Go) is not required.

Nice to have

• Experience building external-facing SDKs, APIs, or developer tools.
• Experience owning CI, testing, versioning, or release infrastructure.
• Forward-deployed engineering experience.
