Job summary

Southland Industries in King of Prussia, PA seeks a senior design engineer to lead HVAC design and document production for large projects. You will manage a team of design engineers and coordinate with architects, contractors, and clients to deliver high-quality solutions within schedule constraints.

The role requires 8+ years of HVAC design experience, strong communication skills, and proficiency with CADD and Trane software. This position is full-time and on-site in King of Prussia, PA.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering is required; P.E. license preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in HVAC design and related field.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of management and clients.
  • Strong reading of mechanical and plumbing drawings; ability to read and interpret plans.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design engineering team and manage HVAC design and document production for projects.
  • Oversee preconstruction activities including design-build and design-assist processes.
  • Prepare preliminary redline designs for estimating.
  • Provide technical guidance to Engineering Team on standards and projects.
  • Ensure quality of work produced by the design engineering group.
  • Participate in conceptual design and represent company at design meetings.
  • Coordinate with clients and other disciplines to ensure timely delivery of high-quality projects.
  • Develop relationships with external project teams during preconstruction.
  • Perform HVAC calculations (loads, equipment sizing, ductwork) and related design tasks.
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure conformance and resolve design issues.
  • Ensure Code Compliance across projects.
  • Communicate project goals with business development, estimating and PM teams.

Job description

Manages all aspects of a project’s design with project management, architects, and other trades through the completion phase of a large project or multiple small projects.

  • Provides leadership and management to a group of design engineers in performing HVAC system design and document production of small and large projects.
  • Manage preconstruction activities including the design process of design-build and design-assist projects.
  • Prepares preliminary (redline) design layouts for estimating.
  • Provide technical guidance to Engineering Team in the development of standards, projects, and people.
  • Responsible for the quality of work produced by assigned design engineering group.
  • Participates in conceptual design for specific projects.
  • Represents the company as a design professional at project team design meetings.
  • Initiate and maintain liaison with client personnel and coordinate with other disciplines contractors, architects, and other project team members to ensure the delivery of high-quality projects to facilitate successful construction activities within the prescribed time frames.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external project teams during preconstruction phase of projects (engineer of record, A/E, GC, Owner, other disciplines).
  • Performs deliverables and products such as calculations, drawings, and specifications related to heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems.
  • Performs calculations for a project, such as heating/cooling loads, equipment selection, and sizing, pipe and duct sizing, friction loss calculations, etc.
  • Performs site inspections to determine compliance with construction documents and resolves design issues during the construction phase.
  • Responsible for Code Compliance.
  • Communicate and manage project goals and requirements with business development, engineering, estimating, and construction project management.
Qualifications
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.P.E. license preferred; 8+ years experience in related field.
  • Excellent working knowledge of HVAC design to include types of equipment utilized in the industry as well as general understanding of system operations (i.e. variable air, constant volume, refrigeration cycle.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, including project management and field trades.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with general contractors/clients while exhibiting company core values.
  • Ability to read mechanical and plumbing drawings well.
  • Competent with general business writing and public speaking.
  • Competent in basic computer skills to include CADD, Trane Software and Microsoft Office products (specifically Excel.)
  • Strong knowledge of engineering industry.
