Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for product design engineering of aftermarket pick-up truck bed covers (a.k.a. Tonneau Covers) and related components for RealTruck’s initiatives. Projects will include conceptual development through to start of production, as well as vehicle application engineering.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Responsible for innovative design concepts and complete product engineering. Collaborate with RealTruck’s R&D team to transfer new technology and concepts into production release and validation.
  2. Design in SolidWorks for manufacturing implementation, utilizing DFMA tools such as DOE and DFMA.
  3. Provide direction for innovative and new product design solutions to meet customer requirements.
  4. Develop DVP&Rs in collaboration with the Engineering Manager and RealTruck’s Corporate Test & Validation team to ensure best practices.
  5. Coordinate and perform product analysis and validation testing for existing and new products to ensure viability, durability, and functionality.
  6. Create product drawings and manage production release processes, including drawing release and ECNs.
  7. Identify and implement continuous product improvements to reduce warranty costs and enhance manufacturing efficiency, safety, quality, and cost (VA/VE).
  8. Work directly with internal and external customers as the main project interface.
  9. Lead troubleshooting efforts and develop solutions during complex situations.
  10. Provide guidance for BOM and dimensional changes needed for new vehicle applications based on existing products.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 4-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • At least 5+ years of professional automotive product engineering experience in OEM or Tier 1, specifically in body/exterior/sealing/mechanisms or similar fields.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skilled in SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Strong presentation skills and critical thinking with a focus on root cause analysis.

Travel

  • Ability to travel locally (Metro-Detroit) and domestically, approximately <5%, with initial travel possibly higher for onboarding.
