Job summary

Trajectory Energy Partners is seeking a Senior Solar Design Analyst to support the development team in creating solar project designs, including PV and BESS layouts and SLDs for interconnection.

The role requires 3+ years of Solar PV design experience, proficiency with AutoCAD and PVSyst, and familiarity with NEC/NFPA/UL9540. Hybrid work options in the Chicago area are available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Design, Environmental Science or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years Solar PV Design experience for ground-mounted community solar or small utility-scale projects.
  • Minimum 1 year BESS design experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and PVSyst.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS (or comparable GIS) preferred.
  • Ability to read and draft SLDs and understand PV electrical components.
  • Hands-on experience supporting development phases (origination, interconnection, permitting).
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, UL9540 preferred.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365; Box for cloud document management preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate clearly.
  • Knowledge or interest in energy or renewable energy development preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop PV and BESS layouts optimizing energy harvest and constructability.
  • Draft SLDs and drawings for Interconnection applications.
  • Overlay third-party designs with Trajectory's designs for consistency.
  • Maintain organized project deliverables for solar, BESS, and solar+BESS.
  • Design projects according to Trajectory Design Standards and train new staff.
  • Create energy models for distribution-scale solar arrays using PVSyst.
  • Provide technical support across project life cycle.
  • Track technical developments and update Design Standards and training materials.
  • Coordinate with outside engineering firms on project deliverables.
  • Perform site visits for assessment and feasibility.
  • Develop NEC and other regs proficiency.
  • Travel as needed.

Job description

Trajectory Energy Partners, a solar energy and energy storage development company, is seeking a Senior Solar Design Analyst who will be responsible for supporting our development team with creating the design for our solar projects.

Trajectory works with communities across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast to develop front-of-the-meter solar and storage projects, focusing primarily on distribution-scale projects.. More information can be found at www.trajectoryenergy.com.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Develop PV and BESS layouts in accordance with land characteristics, permitting constraints, and optimizing for energy harvest, constructability, price efficiency, and long-term operation.
  • Draft single-line diagrams (SLDs) and other drawings required for and in support of Interconnection applications.
  • Overlay third-party designs/drawings against Trajectory's designs and diligence findings to ensure consistency with project requirements.
  • Maintain an organized and clearly documented set of project specific technical deliverables for solar, BESS, and solar + BESS projects.
  • Design projects according to the Trajectory Design Standards and train new employees on the standards.
  • Create energy models for distribution-scale solar arrays utilizing PVSYST.
  • Provide technical support to the Trajectory development team for the entire life cycle of a project including origination, interconnection, development, permitting, transactions, construction and asset management phases.
  • Participate in our continuous improvement environment, including tracking technical and product developments as they relate to solar and BESS designs, updating Trajectory’s Design Standards, and improving training materials in relation to those standards.
  • Support management of outside engineering firms in development of project deliverables.
  • Perform site visits for project assessment and feasibility.
  • Develop proficiency in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other applicable industry regulations (e.g., NFPA, UL9540), as well as state and local codes.
  • Additional duties as assigned and/or directed.

Experience and Background:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Design, Environmental Science or a related field preferred
  • Minimum 3 years Solar PV Design experience involving ground-mounted community solar or small utility-scale projects
  • Minimum 1 year BESS design experience preferred
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and PVSyst required.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS (or comparable GIS software) for mapping and site analysis preferred.
  • Ability to read and draft SLDs with working understanding of PV electrical system components required.
  • Hands-on experience supporting one or more development phases (e.g, origination, interconnection, permitting) required.
  • Familiarity with applicable industry regulations (e.g., NEC, NFPA, UL9540) preferred.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 (Excel, SharePoint, Teams) and cloud-based document management tools such as Box preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously — balancing recurring close deadlines with ad hoc requests without things slipping through the cracks.
  • Clear communicator who can translate complex scenarios with simplicity.
  • Knowledge or interest in energy or renewable energy development is preferred.

Position based in the Chicago area. Flexibility on working from home multiple days a week, and in office typically 2-3 days a week. Salary range is $80,000 - $90,000 dependent on experience.
