Brown County South Dakota seeks a Deputy Public Defender in Aberdeen, SD to represent individuals who cannot afford counsel. Senior title may be designated based on education and experience, with duties spanning criminal, juvenile, and mental health cases.

Responsibilities include legal research, trial participation, and preparing documents, while coordinating with courts and county officials. You must be admitted to the SD Bar and hold a law degree to apply.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited school of law.
• Experience or familiarity with criminal, abuse and neglect, juvenile and mental health cases.
• Current membership in the State Bar of South Dakota.

Responsibilities

• Represents clients in criminal, abuse and neglect, juvenile, mental health and involuntary committal proceedings.
• Conducts legal research and prepares legal documents.
• Participates in initial appearances, arraignments, motion hearings and trials.
• Provides information to the Courts, Court Administration, Clerk of Courts, County Auditor and County Commission as requested.
