Job summary

WEX, Inc. is seeking a Principal Database Engineer specialized in SQL Server and AI-enabled data infrastructure. This hands-on role focuses on modernizing large-scale data platforms, optimizing performance, and delivering autonomous tooling across OLTP/OLAP environments.

You will lead initiatives across data engineering, SRE, and AI teams, driving architecture decisions and implementations. The ideal candidate brings 15+ years in database engineering, deep SQL Server/T-SQL expertise, and

Qualifications

15+ years of experience in database engineering or related field.
Deep hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL, including complex procedures and performance tuning.
Experience modernizing legacy databases and working with large-scale data environments.
Strong programming skills in Python or C# for automation and tooling.
Experience with data pipelines, ETL/ELT, and data integration.
Familiarity with AI-enabled data tooling and embedding/vector databases.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, optimize, and modernize large-scale SQL Server databases and data platforms.
Refactor complex T-SQL, procedures, and database logic; analyze execution plans and indexing.
Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks and tune databases for scaling.
Develop migration strategies and automation to maintain data integrity.
Apply event-driven patterns such as CDC and outbox patterns.
