Role Overview
Seeking a Senior Database Architect to lead SQL Server modernization and AWS database architecture. The primary focus is untangling complex SQL Server replication, implementing Multi-AZ / multi-region HA, and preparing the database layer for a future SQL Server → Aurora PostgreSQL migration.
Must-Have Experience
- Deep SQL Server architecture experience — SQL Server on EC2 and/or RDS SQL Server
- SQL Server performance tuning, troubleshooting and database optimization
- SQL Server → AWS Aurora PostgreSQL migration experience
- Hands-on AWS DMS and Schema Conversion Tool (SCT)
- Strong T-SQL, stored procedure analysis and database object migration
- Experience designing Multi-AZ Availability Groups and multi-region SQL Server architectures
- Terraform / Infrastructure as Code
- Strong understanding of OLTP/OLAP replication and database-to-application integration
Key Responsibilities
- Own SQL Server modernization activities for Phase One
- Analyze and resolve complex OLTP OLAP replication architecture
- Design and implement Multi-AZ and multi-region SQL Server HA/DR
- Perform T-SQL and database object assessment for migration
- Develop migration strategy using AWS DMS/SCT
- Prepare SQL Server databases for eventual Aurora PostgreSQL migration
- Work closely with infrastructure, application and data teams on database architecture
Nice to Have
- PostgreSQL / Aurora PostgreSQL
- Amazon Redshift
- Kinesis Firehose
- Amazon EKS
- Additional DB-to-application integration experience
Environment
SQL Server | EC2 | RDS SQL Server | Aurora PostgreSQL | AWS DMS | SCT | Terraform | Multi-AZ | Multi-Region
Recruiter Screening Checklist
- SQL Server Architect: Has the candidate architected/modernized SQL Server environments—not just administered them?
- AWS Database: Hands-on with SQL Server on EC2/RDS and AWS database architecture?
- Migration: Has the candidate used DMS/SCT and worked on SQL Server → Aurora/PostgreSQL migration?
- HA/DR: Experience with Multi-AZ Availability Groups, replication and/or multi-region SQL Server?
- Hands-on DB: Strong in T-SQL, stored procedures, performance tuning and DB object migration?
Do NOT prioritize generic Data Architects, BI Architects or Data Engineers unless they have the above hands-on SQL Server/AWS database architecture background.
