Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a Database Administrator supporting enterprise-scale environments.
  • Expert-level experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle database platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise database deployments, upgrades, or migrations.
  • Hands‑on experience with database high availability and disaster recovery architectures.
  • Experience migrating or operating databases in AWS (RDS or self-managed on EC2/GovCloud).

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert-level administration and performance tuning for enterprise Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database environments.
  • Lead design, deployment, and support of highly available database architectures, including clustering, replication, and Always On availability groups.
  • Lead migration of on‑premises databases to AWS (RDS, EC2-hosted, or GovCloud) as part of the customer’s data center exit and modernization program.
  • Own database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures in support of the customer's BDCR requirements, including RTO/RPO validation.
  • Implement and enforce database security controls, including access management, encryption, and auditing in accordance with NIST SP 800-53 and agency security policy.
  • Monitor database performance and capacity, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks affecting mission applications.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior database administrators.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, data architecture diagrams, and standard operating procedures.

Job description

Koniag IT Systems, LLC, a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking a Senior Database Administrator to support KITS and our government customer in Washington, DC. The position is remote. This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain a Public Trust.

Koniag IT Solutions (KITS) is seeking a Senior Database Administrator with a minimum of 8 years of experience to support enterprise Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database environments for a federal civilian customer's mission-critical financial and case-management systems. The ideal candidate has led enterprise-scale database deployments, has hands‑on experience migrating on‑premises databases to AWS cloud platforms, and can mentor junior database administrators (DBAs) while owning performance, security, and availability of production database environments.

The Senior Database Administrator will be responsible for providing expert‑level administration and performance tuning for enterprise Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database environments, leading migration of on‑premises databases to AWS as part of the customer's data center exit and modernization program and mentoring junior DBAs.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provide expert-level administration and performance tuning for enterprise Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database environments.
  • Lead design, deployment, and support of highly available database architectures, including clustering, replication, and Always On availability groups.
  • Lead migration of on‑premises databases to AWS (RDS, EC2-hosted, or GovCloud) as part of the customer's data center exit and modernization program.
  • Own database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures in support of the customer's business disaster continuity and recovery (BDCR) requirements, including RTO/RPO validation.
  • Implement and enforce database security controls, including access management, encryption, and auditing in accordance with NIST SP 800-53 and agency security policy.
  • Monitor database performance and capacity, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks affecting mission applications.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior database administrators.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, data architecture diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
  • Partner with application, infrastructure, and security teams to support system releases, patching, and change management.
Education and Experience: Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience as a Database Administrator supporting enterprise-scale environments
  • Expert-level experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle database platforms
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise database deployments, upgrades, or migrations
  • Hands‑on experience with database high availability and disaster recovery architectures
  • Experience migrating or operating databases in AWS (RDS or self-managed on EC2/GovCloud)
Required Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of database security, auditing, and compliance requirements in a federal environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including production of technical documentation
  • Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Desired Skills and Competencies:
  • Experience working in a federal government IT environment
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), or AWS Database Specialty certification
  • Experience supporting financial, loan-servicing, or capital-access database systems
  • Experience with database automation and monitoring tooling (e.g., SQL Server Agent, Oracle Enterprise Manager, or third-party tools)
  • Familiarity with FedRAMP-authorized database services and ATO/ConMon processes
