Position Overview:
The Senior Data Engineer - SQL & AWS will play a key role in building and continuously evolving the organization’s data platform, architecture, pipelines, and enterprise data warehouse. This is a highly hands-on position requiring advanced SQL expertise and strong experience across the AWS data ecosystem. The ideal candidate can take ownership of complex data solutions from design through deployment, work effectively with large datasets, and partner with Data Science, Analytics, and business teams to deliver scalable and reliable data solutions.
Responsibilities of the Senior Data Engineer - SQL & AWS:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data architecture, pipelines, and data models.
- Build and optimize enterprise data warehouse solutions within AWS.
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries across large datasets.
- Develop data models and schemas, including dimensional models and star schemas.
- Build data solutions utilizing AWS services including S3, Glue, Lambda, Athena, EMR, and Redshift.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize data jobs and infrastructure.
- Implement data quality checks, validation rules, monitoring, and alerting.
- Partner with Data Science, Analytics, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver reliable datasets.
- Improve data lineage, documentation, governance, and reusability.
- Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and other Agile development processes.
- Mentor and collaborate with junior and offshore engineering resources.
Required Experience/Skills for the Senior Data Engineer - SQL & AWS:
- 5+ years of professional Data Engineering experience.
- Expert-level SQL skills, including complex query development, joins, CTEs, window functions, aggregations, query optimization, and performance tuning.
- Strong hands-on experience with the AWS data ecosystem.
- Experience with S3, Glue, Lambda, Athena, EMR, and Redshift.
- Strong experience with data architecture and enterprise data warehouses.
- Experience with dimensional modeling and star schemas.
- Experience designing and building production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines.
- Experience working with large and complex datasets.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot data quality, pipeline, and performance issues.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable completing a technical SQL assessment during the interview process.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future employer sponsorship.
- Must be able to work onsite in NYC 4 days per week.
Preferred Experience/Skills for the Senior Data Engineer - SQL & AWS:
- Experience with dbt Labs.
- Python proficiency.
- Experience with DynamoDB, EC2, and/or Redis.
- Experience with data governance, lineage, quality, and observability.
- Previous experience mentoring junior and/or offshore team members.
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field is preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
