The Newark Board of Education, Human Resource Services, invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Senior Custodian Day at various school locations, including Bard High School Early College, Malcolm X Shabazz High School, and Newark Vocational High School. This position is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission, with candidates initially appointed as provisional employees who must later pass an examination for permanent status.

Definition:

Under supervision, supervises custodial personnel engaged in cleaning and maintenance of school buildings and grounds, performing related duties as required.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of experience in building maintenance, including supervisory experience.
• Valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor.
• Driver’s license if operation of a vehicle is required for the job.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:

• Supervise cleaning, maintenance, and groundskeeping activities.
• Inspect buildings and grounds, and coordinate repairs and upkeep.
• Manage equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Maintain records of personnel, work, and materials.
• Ensure safety and order within school premises.

Knowledge and Abilities:

• Knowledge of building maintenance, cleaning procedures, and safety standards.
• Ability to organize work, give instructions, and analyze maintenance problems.
• Effective communication skills in English; ASL or Braille may be acceptable.

Additional Details:

• Salary: $45,200 - $60,625 (subject to change)
• Employment Period: 12 months
• Union: Local 68
