Penguin Random House is committed to building a team that reflects a broad range of backgrounds, identities, and perspectives. We believe that inclusive design shapes the way stories are shared and experienced—and we’re looking for a creative, collaborative, and forward-thinking Senior Designer or Associate Art Director to help lead visual storytelling for our Avery and Tarcher imprints.

These imprints publish acclaimed nonfiction in health, wellness, psychology, science, spirituality, personal growth, and lifestyle—making a positive impact on readers’ lives through accessible and thought-provoking work. Past titles include: Atomic Habits, Set Boundaries, Find Peace, Unwinding Anxiety, Neurotribes, The Book of Joy, Start Where You Are, How We Learn to Be Brave, Good Energy, The Next Conversation, The Inner Work of Racial Justice, and Things Are What You Make of Them.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds, and we encourage those from historically underrepresented communities in publishing and design to apply.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Design innovative book covers and jackets that drive reader engagement—from concept through production
  • Partner with art director, editors, and publishers to manage multiple book projects throughout the approval process
  • Oversee deadline-driven workflows while maintaining exceptional quality across all deliverables
  • Manage creative projects and timelines across staff and freelance contributors
  • Prepare jacket/cover mechanicals - from creation (setting up templates, designing layout, and routing within deadlines) to final production (liaise with production mangers on materials and setup; color correcting before final proofing, and provide files to printer)
  • Organize and archive final design assets for marketing and promotional use

Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:

  • 5 years design experience (publishing, media, or studio experience preferred)
  • Highly creative and passionate about design and books
  • Excellent design ability as demonstrated by an outstanding portfolio
  • Broad knowledge of typography, illustration, and photography
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, quality and process.
  • Agile project management skills with an ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively, with sensitivity and self- awareness, in large group settings
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator

What We Offer:

  • A supportive, creative team environment where diverse ideas are valued
  • Opportunities to grow and lead within one of publishing’s most respected design departments
