Job description

West End House Camp is a residential summer camp in Parsonsfield, Maine. We are looking for a Waterfront Counselor who is at home on the water and energized by working with young people. If spending your summer driving a boat, teaching water sports, and making a real difference in the lives of campers sounds like the right fit, we would love to hear from you.

This is a live‑in position; food and lodging are provided. You will live in a cabin alongside your campers and be part of a close‑knit staff community from mid‑June through mid‑August. The full season is approximately eight weeks, including a week of staff training before campers arrive and any certification training we coordinate on‑site.

We offer a seasonal salary of $1,800 to $2,500 depending on experience, paid bi‑weekly by direct deposit. We’ll cover or reimburse the cost of any required certifications and training for the willing candidate with the right people skills.

What you’ll be doing:

• Assisting the waterfront director in conducting activities including swim instruction, boating, kayaking, and towed water sports such as tubing and water skiing.
• Driving the camp’s tow boat and safely supporting campers in skiing and tubing activities.
• Keeping the waterfront safe, well‑organized, and welcoming for campers of all skill levels.
• Inspecting and maintaining watercraft, equipment, and safety gear on a regular basis.
• Living in a cabin and serving as a steady, caring presence for your campers throughout the day and into the evening.
• Participating fully in staff training, special events, evening programs, and all aspects of camp life.

We are looking for someone with a genuine love of the water and a natural instinct for connecting with young people. The right candidate is responsible, coachable, and excited to show up fully for a summer of meaningful work. You do not need to arrive with every certification in hand. We’ll cover or reimburse the cost of any required certifications and training for the willing candidate with the right people skills.

Required Qualifications and Licenses:

• Age 18 or older by the start of the camp season.
• Current lifeguard certification from a recognized program (American Red Cross, Ellis and Associates, YMCA, or equivalent) or readiness to complete lifeguard training with us.
• Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to complete it during staff training week.
• A Maine Boating Safety Education Certificate or NASBLA‑approved equivalent, as required by Maine law to operate a motorized vessel.
• Comfort operating a motorized boat, or a solid foundation and genuine eagerness to learn under supervision.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States.
• Availability to live on‑site for the full contract period and submission of an up‑to‑date health form before arrival.

You’ll stand out if you bring:

• Hands‑on experience driving a tow boat for water skiing, tubing, or wakeboarding in a camp or recreational setting.
• A Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification or other outdoor credentials.
• Prior experience as a camp counselor or youth‑facing role.
• Familiarity with waterfront safety standards for organized youth aquatics.
