NiSource Inc. is seeking a Senior Counsel-Regulatory to provide expert legal guidance on complex regulatory matters across multiple jurisdictions, including Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

This hybrid role requires strong business acumen, leadership, and the ability to manage outside counsel. Ideal candidates will hold a Juris Doctor with experience handling independent cases, navigating state and federal laws, and delivering timely, well-reasoned

Responsibilities

  • Resolves legal issues and provides proactive, business-savvy legal advice and counsel.
  • Manages complex regulatory matters before state PSCs/commissions and FERC.
  • Attends regulatory hearings across multiple jurisdictions and coordinates travel between offices.
  • Retains and supervises outside counsel on select matters.
  • Anticipates internal/external business and regulatory issues and provides applicable legal advice.
  • Reviews and revises legal documents and agreements.
  • Negotiates with outside parties on contractual issues and disputes.
  • Assists in training clients on legal issues and provides status updates to clients.

Job description

Senior Counsel-Regulatory
  • Hybrid - 3 days/week in office

  • This position can be based in either our Washington DC, Harrisburg, PA or Canonsburg, PA office locations. (Preference for Washington DC)

Job Summary

Provides legal advice to NiSource and its operating companies on complex regulatory matters. Combines knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen, and knowledge of business goals and objectives. Has significant experience and subject matter expertise.

Essential Functions
  • Resolves legal issues and provides proactive, business-savvy legal advice and counsel.

  • Manages complex regulatory matters before the Maryland Public Service Commission, the Virginia State Corporation Commission, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

  • Regular travel to the Maryland Public Service Commission (Baltimore, MD) and occasional travel to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (Richmond, VA), Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (Harrisburg, PA), and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (Washington, DC).

  • Retains and supervises/manages outside counsel on select matters.

  • Anticipates internal/external business and regulatory issues and provides applicable legal advice.

  • Reviews and revises legal documents.

  • Negotiates with outside parties on contractual issues and legal disputes.

  • Assists in training clients on legal issues.

  • Communicates with clients regarding status updates

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications For Position
  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school

  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state in the U.S., Maryland and/or Virginia bar license(s) preferred, and a member in good standing with the state bar(s) upon hire

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
  • Experience in the utility industry or other regulated industry is strongly preferred

  • Experience at a law firm or publicly traded corporation

  • Has significant experience and subject matter expertise

  • 5+ years of legal regulatory experience

Salary Range*

The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
