Job Description
As a Senior Counsel in the R&D Innovation Legal group, you will support AbbVie's R&D organization in navigating enterprise-critical issues in an evolving legal and regulatory environment as we work to bring new, innovative products to patients. This individual will support our pipeline strategies to develop next-generation assets to improve the standard of care for patients. A successful candidate will be motivated by the opportunity to address and solve emerging issues with a strategic and creative business-oriented approach and provide expert counsel on decisions impacting our long-term pipeline strategies.
Responsibilities
- Develop and provide strategic counsel to senior leaders within the R&D and corporate strategy organizations on legal and regulatory issues impacting pipeline development, government agency engagement, and product innovation. A technical degree is preferred to advise on intersections between law and scientific/innovation approaches to drug development.
- Embed within the Specialty and/or Aesthetics therapeutic areas to contribute as a key member of disease area strategy teams responsible for long-term R&D and innovation strategies, focusing on pipeline development and FDA and IRA considerations. Note: This role does not focus on FDA advertising and promotional considerations.
- Educate other AbbVie legal departments and business stakeholders on emerging laws, regulations, and industry trends affecting the pipeline and R&D early-stage discovery and product development.
- Proactively identify complex legal issues, develop creative solutions, and implement resolutions.
- Adopt a business-oriented and creative approach to problem solving.
- Identify unmet needs and future legal issues, proposing strategies to optimize outcomes in complex legal, business, and technological areas.
- Advise senior leadership, being recognized as an expert and trusted advisor in the substantive legal area.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate, admitted to practice in at least one U.S. state, with professional licensing requirements met. A technical degree in life sciences or related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 7+ years of relevant experience practicing in-house at a pharmaceutical company, at a recognized law firm specializing in life sciences, or in a government agency, or a combination thereof.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical laws and regulations impacting drug development, excluding promotional considerations.
- Experience advising on the Inflation Reduction Act and Medicare Drug Pricing Program is a plus.
- Excellent presentation skills, comfortable presenting complex information to senior leaders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
- Adaptability to changing environments and managing multiple priorities.
- This is a hybrid role based near one of AbbVie's offices in North Chicago, IL; Irvine, CA; Florham Park, NJ; or Massachusetts.
Additional Information
Compensation range: $156,000 - $296,500, depending on location and experience. Benefits include paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), and participation in incentive programs. Pay is contingent on various factors and subject to change.
