Job summary

The Weather Company seeks a Senior Counsel – Data & Media to partner with Enterprise Data and Media teams, drafting and negotiating licensing deals and guiding privacy/governance in a hybrid, Atlanta-based setting. With 8+ years of legal experience and a strong in-house background, you will enable data commercialization and tech product development while managing complex vendor and customer relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert and strategic legal advice to Enterprise Data and Media lines of business, acting as a mini-GC for those units.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex data licensing agreements, including inbound/outbound licenses and data-as-a-service.
  • Structure and negotiate software licensing, hosted services, and technology platform access terms.
  • Advise on data commercialization strategies, data rights, usage restrictions, and downstream licensing.
  • Handle vendor, customer, and strategic partnership arrangements across the portfolio.
  • Develop and maintain standard contracting templates and playbooks for recurring deals.
  • Support data privacy and data governance initiatives with privacy implications consideration.
  • Assist with marketing legal review.
  • Develop, manage, and oversee relationships with outside counsel and other providers.
  • Provide legal support across the business as priorities shift.

Job brief:

The Senior Counsel – Data & Media will serve as a strategic legal partner to The Weather Company’s Enterprise Data and Media business units, reporting directly to the Deputy General Counsel . This role involves managing a broad spectrum of legal matters, with a primary focus on drafting and negotiating complex data and software licensing agreements, supporting data commercialization strategies, and guiding data privacy and governance initiatives . The ideal candidate will possess over 8 years of legal experience, including at least 5 years in-house, with substantial expertise in the technology industry, B2B engagements, and product development, enabling them to effectively navigate the company's legal needs and commercial objectives in a hybrid, Atlanta-based environment .

The impact you'll make:

  • Providing expert and strategic legal advice to TWC's Enterprise Data and Media lines of business, functioning as a mini-GC for these business units with the ability to manage a broad range of legal matters.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex data licensing agreements, including inbound and outbound data licenses, and data-as-a-service arrangements.
  • Structuring and negotiating software licensing agreements, hosted services agreements, and technology platform access terms.
  • Supporting TWC's expanding Enterprise Data business by providing legal guidance on data commercialization strategies, data rights, usage restrictions, and downstream licensing terms.
  • Handling vendor, customer, and strategic partnership arrangements across the Enterprise Data and Media portfolio.
  • Developing and maintaining standard contracting templates and playbooks for recurring deal structures.
  • Supporting data privacy and data governance initiatives, with particular attention to the privacy implications of TWC's data licensing and enterprise product offerings.
  • Assisting with marketing legal review.
  • Developing, managing, and cost-effectively overseeing relationships with outside counsel and other legal services providers.
  • Providing legal support on other matters as needed by the business, with the ability to adapt quickly to new subject areas and shifting priorities.

What you've accomplished:

  • 8+ years of legal experience; 5+ years in-house.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school is required.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the USA and in good standing.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the technology industry, including experience with technology companies, software product development, and data licensing.
  • Substantial knowledge and expertise regarding B2B engagements.
  • Ability to support Product and Engineering teams in software development for applications.
  • Exceptional negotiation skills, with the ability to represent the company's interests effectively.
  • Excellent judgment and ability to understand and manage business risks.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels within and outside the organization.
Nice to have:
  • Law firm experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with employment and HR-related legal matters.
  • Background in regulatory compliance, including privacy and data protection regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with intellectual property matters, including trademark, copyright, patent, and trade secret issues as they arise in the ordinary course of business.

The base salary offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region of work premises, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
