Job summary

Markel seeks a Senior Legal Counsel, Ceded Reinsurance to join a global team supporting outward reinsurance transactions and collateralized risk transfer. You will structure, draft, negotiate, and close reinsurance agreements, trust and collateral frameworks, commutations, and specialty product documents with fronting arrangements.

You will collaborate with underwriting, finance, claims, and Nephila’s legal teams across Bermuda, London, and the US to ensure regulatory compliance and timely

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and JD required.
• 8+ years of (re)insurance transactional work experience.
• Familiarity with BMA regulatory filings and governance.
• Credit, collateral and concentration risk acumen to manage fronting and quotas.

Responsibilities

• Draft, edit and finalize reinsurance contracts for outward placements and fronting.
• Negotiate contract terms, coverage and wordings to protect Markel’s interests.
• Provide end-to-end legal support for ILS activities including structuring, drafting and closing relevant agreements.
• Structure and maintain trust agreements and risk transfer frameworks supporting ILS fund groups.
• Advise on specialty products, ROA language, claims, commutation and related agreements.
• Build relationships with ILS council to align legal and ceded teams.
