Job summary

Voltus, a fully remote energy platform, seeks a senior in-house energy attorney to draft, review, and negotiate complex energy storage and commercial contracts. You will advise cross-functional teams on legal risk, participate in structuring battery storage transactions, and ensure compliance with market regulations across ISO/RTO markets such as PJM, ERCOT, MISO, and NYISO.

You will mentor junior lawyers, develop templates and playbooks, and work with sales, product, and finance to align terms

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; strong academic credentials
• Minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years of relevant legal experience, including significant energy industry experience
• Direct experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating BESS contracts and related transactions
• Extensive experience drafting, preparing, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial agreements in energy storage and related areas
• Working knowledge of U.S. energy markets, ISO/RTO structures, and regulatory frameworks governing distributed energy resources and energy storage
• Ability to manage a diverse and complex workload with priorities and deadlines
• Excellent drafting skills and attention to detail

Responsibilities

• Review, draft, negotiate, and interpret a wide range of energy and commercial contracts, including BESS agreements and PPAs
• Serve as senior legal advisor on structuring, negotiating, and closing energy storage transactions
• Advise sales and partnerships teams on legal implications and risks to achieve commercial objectives
• Provide guidance on regulatory and market-specific issues affecting energy storage across ISO/RTO markets
• Develop templates, playbooks, and training for storage and commercial contracting
• Mentor junior members of the legal team on contract negotiation and energy industry matters
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align terms with company objectives
• Help develop processes to ensure ongoing compliance with contractual commitments
• Define best practices around workflow to scale the legal department
• Assist with ad-hoc legal matters as needed

The Voltus Legal Team is growing and looking for a senior in-house energy attorney who is passionate about combating climate change. We're looking for a commercial attorney with deep experience in the energy markets space, including direct experience negotiating battery energy storage system (BESS) contracts. If you are a self-starter with laser-focused attention to detail who thrives in a fast-paced environment, we'd love to hear from you. Your primary responsibilities will include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial, partnership, and energy storage agreements, assessing potential risks, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Location

Voltus is a fully-remote company, however, the candidate must reside in the United States and be authorized to work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

• Review, draft, negotiate, and interpret a wide range of energy and commercial contracts, including battery energy storage system (BESS) agreements, tolling agreements, power purchase agreements (PPAs), interconnection agreements, BESS equipment supply agreements, battery-specific safety, decommissioning, and end-of-life obligations, and other distributed energy resource contracts
• Serve as senior legal advisor on structuring, negotiating, and closing battery storage and other energy storage transactions, working closely with commercial, engineering, and finance teams
• Advise the sales and partnership teams on legal implications, risks, and opportunities associated with various commercial structures under consideration, and support those teams in achieving commercial objectives consistent with legal risk tolerance
• Provide substantive guidance on regulatory and market-specific issues affecting energy storage and demand response transactions across ISO/RTO markets (e.g., PJM, ERCOT, MISO, NYISO), including storage participation models under FERC Order Nos. 841 and 2222
• Utilize and build upon deep knowledge of legal issues relating to energy regulatory matters, IP, data use, privacy, and labor and employment law
• Prepare, maintain, and improve template agreements, playbooks, training, and operational guidance for storage and commercial contracting
• Mentor and provide guidance to junior members of the legal team on contract negotiation and energy industry matters
• Work closely with teams across sales operations, product, finance, marketing, field operations, regulatory, and engineering to ensure terms align with company objectives and priorities
• Help develop processes to ensure ongoing compliance with contractual commitments and provide practical, solutions-oriented advice to help client teams navigate issues that may arise
• Define and implement best practices around workflow and process to further scale the legal department
• Assist with ad-hoc legal matters as needed

Desired Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; strong academic credentials
• Minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years of relevant legal experience, including significant experience in the energy industry (required)
• Direct experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating battery energy storage system (BESS) contracts and related transactions (required)
• Extensive experience drafting, preparing, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial agreements, particularly energy storage, PPAs, tolling agreements, strategic partnership, and product agreements
• Working knowledge of U.S. energy markets, ISO/RTO structures, and regulatory frameworks governing distributed energy resources and energy storage
• Experience with behind-the-meter or C&I-sited storage, and with storage participating in demand response or wholesale capacity/ancillary services markets is strongly preferred
• Strong problem solving, innovation, and collaboration skills, as well as business acumen
• Ability to independently manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities and anticipating issues
• Excellent drafting skills and attention to detail
• Able to perform quickly in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment to successfully multitask and manage deadlines
• Experience working in Google Drive, Salesforce, Adobe PDF, Ironclad, and DocuSign strongly preferred but not required

$150,000 - $170,000 a year

Base pay is $150K-$170K annually, commensurate with experience, with 10-15% bonus paid annually, and equity.
