Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Nutrition, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Business Administration or related field; or a Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of responsible foodservice experience, including supervisory capacity.
  • Professional certificate covering the field of school foodservice, such as School Nutrition Specialists Credential is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations applicable to school nutrition programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and directing the overall school nutrition program.
  • Assist with preparation and administration of budget and establish bid processes.
  • Coordinate bids, orders, and distribution of foodservice supplies and equipment.
  • Supervise interns and managers/trainers; plan staffing and training.
  • Coordinate eligibility determination for free and reduced meal applications and direct certification.
  • Prepare and review school nutrition reports and correspondence.

Custom Job Purpose

This position exists to perform responsible administrative work assisting in the overall operation of the school nutrition program for the School District.

Essential Functions of this Job

Serves as assistant to the School Nutrition Director. Assists in planning and directing the overall school nutrition program. Assists with preparation and administration of budget. Sets specifications for food and non-food supplies and awards bids. Requisitions USDA donated foods. Plans menus and establishes food tests for quality, acceptability and adherence to specifications. Coordinates bids, orders and distribution of foodservice uniforms. Coordinates ongoing eligibility determination for free and reduced meal applications and direct certification. Prepares, reviews and updates accounting, inventory and other school nutrition reports. Prepares correspondence relating to the school nutrition program. Coordinates all professional development and training for School Nutrition personnel. Plans and develops teaching materials for personnel training. Attends meetings and conferences; conducts meetings and workshops for school nutrition personnel. Assists in the Orientation Workshop for school nutrition substitutes. Along with the Director, screens and interviews new school nutrition employees. Coordinates manager intern and manager/trainer programs and recommends candidates for hire. Supervises the work of interns and manager/trainers and evaluates their performance. Assists Director in the determination of staffing needs for District Schools. Assists school principals and school nutrition managers in planning new facilities and the renovation of facilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the local, state and federal laws and regulations applicable to school nutrition programs. Considerable knowledge of the practices and procedures used in the administration and operation of school nutrition. Knowledge of sanitary and safety conditions. Considerable knowledge of purchasing, warehousing, inventorying, and accounting for food products. High level of skill using computers and school nutrition related software. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with district and school personnel and subordinates. Ability to use initiative and judgment in systematizing procedure, adjusting problems and grievances, and making recommendations relative to the revisions of school nutrition procedures. Supervisory ability. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.

Work Context

Requires some sitting and standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires work with internal and external contacts, and with the public.

Physical Environment

Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires sitting for the majority of the day, and the ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects infrequently weighing up to 20 pounds.
