Job summary

Children's Services of Roxbury, Inc. seeks a Senior Controller to oversee daily accounting operations and internal controls, ensuring accurate financial reporting and regulatory compliance. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • 7+ years in a non-profit supervisory role managing a $40M+ budget.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, MA UFR guidelines, and non-profit fund accounting.
  • Proficiency with ERP software and advanced Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll reconciliation, and vendor billings; establish and enforce robust internal control policies.
  • Lead monthly close and coordinate the annual audit; ensure regulatory compliance with state and federal funding.
  • Prepare timely, GAAP-compliant financial statements and provide variance analyses.
  • Monitor contracts and revenue recognition for state human service funding and align with GL.
  • Assist CFO with budgeting and grant management; oversee revenue tracking and reporting.
  • Direct supervision of Staff Accountant, Payroll Specialist, and Senior Staff Accountant.

Position Summary

The Senior Controller manages all daily accounting operations, internal controls, and financial reporting cycles for CSR. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the agency's financial infrastructure. The Senior Controller leads the monthly closing process, coordinates the annual audit, ensures strict regulatory compliance with state and federal funding, and provides direct oversight to the transactional accounting and billing teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accounting Leadership: Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll reconciliation, and vendor billings; establish and enforce robust internal control policies; Review/Prepare the monthly balance sheet accounts reconciliation and resolve any variances.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare timely, accurate monthly and annual financial statements under GAAP; deliver variance and program-specific financial analysis directly to the CFO.
  • Audit & Tax Compliance: Assist in the operational preparation for the annual Uniform Guidance (Single Audit) and financial audits; manage the timely filing of the Massachusetts Uniform Financial Report (UFR) and IRS Form 990.
  • Contract & Revenue Oversight: Monitor financial compliance for state human service contracts (EEC, DCF, DMH); collaborate with the Director of Revenue Cycle to ensure billing alignment with general ledger revenue recognition.
  • Budgeting: Collaborate with the CFO to design, implement, and monitor the agency’s annual operating budget.
  • Grant & Fund Management: Track restricted and unrestricted funds. Collaborate with program leasers to build grant budgets and track expenditures against grantor requirements.
  • Team Supervision: Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate the Staff Accountant, Payroll Specialist, and the part-time Senior Staff Accountant.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA or Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience: Progressive accounting experience, with at least 7 years in a non-profit supervisory role managing a $40M+ budget.
  • Skills: Deep knowledge of Massachusetts UFR guidelines, GAAP compliance, and non-profit fund accounting; proficiency in modern accounting ERP software and advanced Excel.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to clearly explain financial concepts to non-financial staff and the board of directors.
