Hatch is seeking a Senior Control Systems and Automation Engineer to work in our Hatch IAS - Downstream Technologies Group at our Pittsburgh, PA office. The successful applicant will be involved in the development and delivery of Hatch Rolling Mill Automation Technology . Our team is focused on the commercialization and delivery of control systems and custom equipment package technologies for the flat rolled metals industry, specifically surrounding flat rolling mills.

Reporting to the Global Director of Metal Processing, this is a senior-level position and the candidate would be responsible for the design, implementation, and commissioning of control systems for flat metal processing. Most of our marketplace is in North America, but some overseas travel will be required for installation, commissioning, and customer support. Our team specializes in the design and supply of flat rolling mill automation systems and equipment technology packages for both brownfield and greenfield rolling mill projects. We’re a team of innovators and problem solvers who develop and deliver specialized engineering solutions and technologies.

In this role you will work primarily in the Downstream Technologies – Rolling Mill Automation field and interact with engineers from all disciplines, in a team environment. The automation systems include control of electro-hydraulic and electro-mechanical control actuators, plant models, sensor technology, on-line control using computers and/or PLCs, communication networks, data logging, reporting, fault diagnostics and human-machine interfaces. Development platforms include PCs, Rockwell and Siemens PLCs, using ladder logic, function block, and structures text programming, and various HMI software packages.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Leading the controls and automation side of the Rolling Mill Automation products, both in the existing model-based control systems and developing new products and controls to maintain Hatch at the leading edge in the sector
  • Control and automation software and hardware development – including design, programming, and commissioning equipment at client sites
  • Working with clients at all levels by setting, supporting and achieving their expectations and project goals to achieve a successful project result
  • Engineer, design, and specify components for control and equipment packages, involving all or some of the following - electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and pneumatic systems
  • Manage control and automation projects, regularly communicating with clients, technical managers and project team members
  • Regularly interfacing and liaising with the product manager and internal or external mechanical engineering groups to coordinate complete equipment system design
  • Assist with client engagement and business development for existing and new metals industry clients to create business, including preparation of overall project estimates, proposals and schedules
  • Development of control strategies, PLC programming, implementation on-site and commissioning
  • Data and system analysis to diagnose limitations and identify improvements
  • Instrumentation and control system design including development of P&ID’s, architecture diagrams and detailed wiring/schematic drawings
  • Lead and review panel and equipment specification packages, to be equipment procurement and fabrication/assembly
  • Development of technical specifications, plans, reports, and engineering work packages
  • Participate in site visits to vendor/supplier shops, and provide installation support and commissioning at client project sites as required
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work in project work sites (including remote sites) or other Hatch offices as needs arise
  • Research and development of new technologies to help our clients meet their challenges.
  • Provide support and direction to less experienced team members

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate of a Bachelor of Engineering or Applied Science degree from an accredited university in the controls, electrical, mechatronics (or related) discipline. Academic courses should include Control Systems and Programming.
  • Five or more years of experience working in control and automation.
  • Experience in design of electric circuits, control systems, programming, networking and communications systems
  • Experience with both Siemens and Allen Bradley PLC technologies and platforms
  • Must have proven skills with PLC programming and MATLAB.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Python, LabView and real-time controllers an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of industry or regulatory standards, regulations, and codes pertinent to the design of electrical systems
  • Collaborate on exciting projects to develop innovative solutions
