Job summary

GE Vernova, Inc. is seeking a senior HVDC systems engineer to oversee the technical solution and drive HVDC control and protection design across reference solutions. You will lead requirements gathering, system design, validation, and documentation, while mentoring junior engineers and coordinating with customers.

The role requires extensive experience in PSCAD, RSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, and real-time HWIL environments. Hybrid work arrangements are available with a base in Oakbrook Terrace, IL.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• 10 years of HVDC control and protection design experience.
• Experience with PSCAD, RSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink; real-time HWIL using OPAL-RT/RTDS.
• IST, FAT, SAT testing; protection coordination and system studies.

Responsibilities

Job description

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

• Oversee the overall technical solution, ensuring customer requirements are met based on reference solutions.
• Lead requirements gathering, system design, implementation, and development of HVDC Control and Protection systems.
• Review and approve technical documents, including control and protection settings, manuals, test plans, and test procedures.
• Serve as the primary customer interface for technical discussions, training, and requirements clarification.
• Define control philosophies, protection and interlocking logics, and data exchange configurations.
• Lead and participate in engineering design processes, including design reviews and approval cycles.
• Ensure that all design outputs comply with industry standards, system requirements, and quality procedures.
• Conduct Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies using PSCAD, EMTP-RV, and model control/protection functions in MATLAB/Simulink.
• Perform network conversion, modelling, tuning, and verification using PSSE, PSCAD, and RSCAD.
• Develop full plant and system models and lead end-to-end validation across multiple simulation platforms.
• Lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting of complex VSC control and protection issues.
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and knowledge transfer to junior engineers.
• Support managers in building high-performing, resilient teams.
• Recruit, develop, and mentor engineering talent to enhance organizational capability.
• Identify and implement improvements in engineering tools, processes, systems, and technical solutions to enhance customer value and operational efficiency.
• Make informed decisions regarding work processes, schedules, priorities, and operational plans to achieve departmental objectives.
• Uphold and promote SQDC principles across teams.

Job Description

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related.
• Ten (10) years of experience in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) control and protection system design.
• Work experience to include: HVDC Control, Protection, and Sequencing strategies; Dynamic performance studies and system modelling for VSC-HVDC schemes; PSCAD, RSCAD, MATLAB and Simulink; Translating and communicating customer requirements to drive reference solutions, process improvements, and consistent technical quality across multi-disciplinary engineering teams; Real-time simulation environments for Hardware-in-the-Loop using OPAL-RT or RTDS; System testing including: Integration System Test (IST), Functional System Test (FST), Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT); and Control system studies and testing, including: Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), Dynamic performance studies, Protection coordination, and Overall system integration.

This position allows for a hybrid work arrangement. Candidate may work remotely two (2) days per week, while reporting to the Oakbrook Terrace, IL worksite during the remainder of the week. For U.S. based positions only, the pay range for this position is $156,229-$207,700 annually.

The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 10% variable incentive compensation.
