Position Overview

CARIAN is seeking an experienced Senior Construction Supervisor, Manhole & Conduit to support utility construction activities for one of our major utility clients in New Jersey.

This role will provide field construction supervision for the installation of manholes, conduit, duct banks, excavation, restoration, and related underground construction work. The Senior Construction Supervisor will oversee and coordinate contractors, vendors, trades, and field personnel, while helping ensure projects are completed safely, within scope, on schedule, and within budget.

The ideal candidate has strong construction field experience in electric distribution, utility construction, civil design, engineering, operations, maintenance, construction, or a related field environment. This role requires strong field judgment, communication skills, technical coordination, contractor oversight, documentation discipline, and the ability to manage multiple projects and assignments in a live utility construction environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide field construction supervision for manhole, conduit, and related underground construction work.
  • Manage multiple projects and assignments simultaneously for utility construction programs.
  • Oversee and coordinate the work of contractors, vendors, trades, and field personnel as required by project needs and client procedures.
  • Support contract preparation, contract administration, and contract compliance in accordance with applicable company and client policies.
  • Coordinate the construction process to support completion within approved scope, schedule, and budget expectations.
  • Maintain responsibility for jobsite safety, quality control, environmental compliance, and field execution discipline.
  • Provide technical support in the field and participate in project review meetings.
  • Resolve field problems, contractor conflicts, schedule issues, access constraints, labor issues, and construction-related disputes.
  • Interface with governmental agencies, municipalities, inspectors, and other external stakeholders regarding permitting, licensing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in design and engineering coordination to support constructability, field readiness, and project execution.
  • Prepare or support bid packages and coordinate with Procurement in the selection of contractors and vendors.
  • Oversee layout, excavation, installation of manholes, conduit, duct banks, backfill, restoration, and related field activities.
  • Perform daily jobsite visits and inspections to confirm work is completed in accordance with approved designs, specifications, utility standards, industry codes, and applicable regulations.
  • Complete construction reports, including contractor billing support, in-service reports, contractor and vendor evaluations, project closeout reports, and lessons learned reports.
  • Support outage, clearance, access, traffic control, and work sequencing coordination as needed.
  • Perform on-call duties and provide emergency response support if and when required.
  • Maintain proficiency with client project delivery processes and procedures, company standards and policies, and applicable industry and regulatory codes and standards.
  • Escalate issues quickly and communicate clearly with project leadership.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure work is executed in a professional, disciplined, and utility-compliant manner.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of construction field experience in electric distribution, utility construction, civil design, engineering, operations, maintenance, construction, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience supervising, managing, or overseeing field construction activities.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, vendors, trades, field personnel, and project stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of manhole, conduit, and underground construction means and methods.
  • Familiarity with manholes, conduits, duct banks, excavation, trenching, backfill, restoration, traffic control, permits, and utility field coordination.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, work packages, permits, and field documentation.
  • Knowledge of computer-based business applications and ability to complete required construction reporting and documentation.
  • Strong communication, documentation, coordination, and issue-resolution skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and represent CARIAN professionally with clients, contractors, agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel to project sites throughout New Jersey.
  • Availability to support project-driven schedules, on-call duties, emergency response, off-hours work, or weekend work as project needs require.
Preferred Experience
  • 10+ years of utility construction or underground infrastructure experience.
  • Manhole and conduit installation experience.
  • Electric distribution or underground utility infrastructure experience.
  • Experience with major electric utility clients.
  • Experience supporting contract administration, contractor billing, vendor evaluations, project closeout, and lessons learned reporting.
  • Experience coordinating with municipalities, governmental agencies, inspectors, permitting authorities, and utility project stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting bid packages, procurement coordination, contractor/vendor selection, and constructability reviews.
  • Experience working in public rights-of-way, roadways, active utility environments, or regulated infrastructure construction settings.
  • Prior experience as a senior construction supervisor, construction manager, field supervisor, civil foreman, general foreman, inspector, or owner’s representative.
  • OSHA 30 preferred.

Compensation

The hourly rate range for this role is $55 – $80 per hour. This range represents a good‑faith estimate at the time of posting; actual compensation will depend on experience, qualifications, assignment requirements, schedule, and other factors permitted by law. In addition to base compensation, the role includes eligibility for applicable overtime, a comprehensive benefits package, and a company 401(k) match.
